TWO TURTLEDOVES AND A SAVIOR!

“Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”  (Luke 2:22. NKJV)

“But isn't Jesus God?” Grandfather nodded. “Then why present Him to the Lord in Jerusalem?”

“The law stated every firstborn male is holy to the Lord. His parents fulfilled the law when they presented Him at the Temple.”

“So the sacrifice was for Him?” Grandfather shook his head. Timmy sighed. “I don’t get it."

“The sacrifice was for the new mother. She would offer a pair of turtledoves and be declared ceremonially clean again.”

“Wait, Grandfather. I thought the Lord Jesus was the sacrifice for sin.”

“You’re right. But this was before He died on the cross. Think about it. Mary had to offer a sacrifice for her sins. All she could afford were two turtledoves, while in her arms, she held the Lamb of God, who would take away the sins of the world.”

Silence.

“Timmy?”

“Umm, it’s awesome when you think about it,” his eyebrows dipped. “But hard to understand.”

Grandfather put his arm around Timmy’s shoulders. “We don’t have to understand to praise Him and be thankful. He knows our hearts, son, and we need Someone perfect to offer Himself in our place.”

"To think He loves us that much. Still think it's hard to understand."

"Totally agree," Grandfather said as he hugged his grandson.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus provided the way by offering Himself as my sacrifice. He loves me and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. Think about it!

THE BEST GIFT

In Isaiah 9:6, we read: “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.”

“The service was long.” Timmy sighed. He followed Grandfather down the church steps, hopped into the truck.

“Didn’t get much out of it, huh? What’d you do? Count the light bulbs?” Grandfather chuckled. “Guess I thought the same when I was your age.”

Seatbelts fastened, Grandfather pulled into the street, headed south. “We’re not going home?”

“Nope. Thought we’d take a detour.” Out of town, he turned down a dirt road filled with pot holes and deep ruts. Timmy leaned forward.

“The farm?” Grandfather nodded, stopped the truck. “That old barn looks like it’s about to fall down.”

“Come on.” He reached behind his seat, pulled out a bag. “I brought lunch. Grab that blanket, will you?” He pushed open the barn door, motioned his grandson inside. Timmy sneezed.

“This place is a palace compared to the stable where our Lord was born,” Grandfather said. “Help me spread the blanket.” Timmy remained quiet as they ate their sandwiches.

The December wind whistled through the cracks, stirring bits of hay and debris. Dust motes danced in the beams of light.

“Why did the Lord Jesus have to be born in such a place? Why not a palace?”

“He chose to remove His royal robes in Heaven and come to earth as a helpless baby," Grandfather said. "He did it to offer everyone His grace and love, no matter if they’re lowly born or born in a fancy home. He invites whosoever to come.”

“That includes me,” Timmy whispered, turned to Grandfather, tears in his eyes. “I am so sorry. I forgot what He did for me.”

Grandfather put his arm around his shoulders. “I understand. We humans have a tendency to accept the gifts He gives and forget we receive the gifts because He took our place on the cross.” Timmy dipped his head. “But the good news? He loves us and He understands us.” His head snapped up. He smiled.

Kingdom Thinking. This Christmas season with the Covid 19 along with hardships and unrest shows me the real meaning of Christmas. It’s not about the gifts I give or receive but The Gift the Lord gives--Eternal Life. He came to earth as a baby to prepare the way to Heaven. He loves me and has a plan for my life. He presents you with the Gift. Won’t you receive it?

THE CHRISTMAS SURPRISE!

“So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manager, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2:4-7. (NKJV).

Scenery in place, practices done, now? Show time.  The four and five year olds would take part and Susan, the director, was a bit nervous. Most of the children followed her directions but--she thought of Ricky. Definitely, a free spirit.

The angel choir stood on the risers and sang with gusto. Proud parents smiled, nudged one another. The narrator spoke, pulling the emotional strings at just the right moment.

Susan smiled. So far, so good. And then...

A stirring from the back of the church? A dog must’ve sneaked in and scrunched his way under the pews down to the front. Belonged to one of the kids? Folks shuffled to let him past.

As Mary and Joseph leaned over the manger, a head popped up from under the first pew, crawled over and peeped in.

“He’s alive,” Ricky shouted as he leaped to his feet. “He really is alive. Look, if you don’t believe me.” He pointed to the baby who began to cry, his fists swatting the air.

Susan hurried over, picked up her son, and turned. “So sorry. Didn’t mean to cause a fuss, but he fell asleep so I...” Applause and a standing ovation interrupted her.

Kingdom Thinking. Life today with Covid 19 and dissent causes fear and weariness. I have a choice. I can look at our problematic world or the Baby in the manger. He's Real. All God and all man. He lives, therefore I live. Now and throughout eternity. The Lord Jesus offers you the same. He loves you and promises never to forsake you. Won’t you receive Him? He’s alive! A true Christmas surprise!

SUGAR AND SPICE? OR NOTHING NICE?

“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life.” 2 Corinthians 2:14-16. (NKJV).

Cing ran up the steps, across the back porch and into the kitchen. She jerked to a stop, closed her eyes, inhaled. Aromas of cinnamon, gloves, vanilla, peppermint--must be what Heaven smells like!

She shivered with excitement. Just the thought of Christmas baking with Grandmother brought a grin. She loved rolling out and cutting the cookies, then decorating them with icing.

“Come on, dumpling,” Grandmother said, a smile in her voice. “We’ve a lot of happy work to do.”

Work in full swing, Grandfather walked into the kitchen. He didn’t mind the floured hands that snaked around his neck, giving him a big hug.

“Ummm, Cing,” he said. “You smell like a snickerdoodle, my favorite.”

“And you smell like peppermint, Grandfather. Does everyone have a special smell?”

“You’d better believe it. Our lives smell like the things we do. At present you smell of Christmas. Spices and everything nice.” He chuckled. “But you took on the smell of pluff mud when you fell into the marsh.”

She giggled, went back to her work with Grandmother. They’d be plenty of cookies to share with neighbors and friends. Sugar and spice and everything nice.

Kingdom Thinking. Like Cing, I share the aroma of my life. As the Lord Jesus lives through me, His sweet smelling aroma of love penetrates, touching others around us. A sweet perfume to those who love or will love Him but the stench of death to those who reject Him. He promises never to leave nor forsake me and loves me with an everlasting love. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

HE KNOWS MY NAME?

“But now, this says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are mine.’” Isaiah 43:l (NKJV).

A teenage girl disappeared. No amount of searching revealed a clue.

Janie jumped at the slightest noise, found it difficult to concentrate at school though Daddy assured her of her safety. Buddy, her Boston Bull terrier, slept on the foot of her bed.

She'd dropped into a restless sleep when her eyes popped open. Fingers stroked her right cheek. Was she  next?

She sucked in a deep breath. “Daddy!” She screamed at top volume. The hand didn’t slow. The person's deaf? Daddy ran into the room, clicked on the light.

And--he laughed? Mama came in, covered her mouth to hide her grin. Daddy walked to her bed, gently removed her left arm that encircled her head on her pillow. Her arm, numb, had gone to sleep.

“Is this what caused all the racket?” Daddy smiled. “Seems simple in the light, does’t it?”

“But I thought--“

“Janie, Janie. I know. We often think the worse. Our mind tricks us and fear stalks in, taking us captive. Remember our Bible verse this morning?” She nodded.

“Fear not. I have redeemed you. I’ve called you by your name. You are mine.” She paused. “It’s difficult to remember when I’m scared. I’m really His?”

"You’re really His. He said so and He keeps His Word.”

Kingdom thinking. This uncertain time during Covid 19 and the unrest in our world presents me with choices--to believe the promises of the Scriptures or believe the shadows that plague me. The Lord Jesus promises never to leave nor forsake me. He loves me with an everlasting love. He knows me by name. He knows your name, too. Won’t you come to Him?

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE!

“Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!  Psalm107:21 (NKJV).

This year Thanksgiving will be a bit different. No family will join us around the table, no retelling of happenings from other gatherings. Yes, it’ll be different but there is reason to give thanks.

As I sat in the doctor’s office waiting to be called, two ladies participated in a loud conversation. I wasn’t eavesdropping--just couldn’t help overhearing.

“Haven’t seen you for years. What’s happened in your life?”

“I got married.”

“ Congratulations! That’s wonderful.”

“Not so wonderful. He’s mean as a snake.”

“That’s awful.”

“Not so awful. He died.”

‘I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry. He left me a wealthy widow.”

Circumstances change. It’s up to me to learn from them, to look for the good, not concentrate on the negative.

I choose to believe the Lord Jesus loves me and has a plan for my life. If I look at circumstances, I’m in big trouble. I must look to the One who asks me to give thanks for His goodness and His wonderful works, to me, my family and loved ones.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus promises never to leave nor forsake me and to love me with an everlasting love--the reason for giving thanks. He offers the same to you. Won’t you choose Him?

CHOOSE THANKS!

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 2 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NKJV).

“You don’t understand. I have an appointment with the doctor. I need  help with my husband’s dementia.”

The receptionist stood, arms crossed, leaning against the counter.

Pain short circuited my thankful circuit--mental anguish and doubt slammed me. Head down, shoulders slumped, I scurried back to the car. She wouldn't allow me to keep the appointment. Not without my husband present.

With head in my hands, I gave way to the flood of emotions held at bay.

Tap, tap.

My head snapped up. A little lady stood there. When I rolled down the window, she reached in, touched my shoulder.

“I saw you leave the office. Knew you were upset. What can I do to help?”

Man, would these tears ever slow down? She handed me a tissue. “Thank you.” I hiccuped. Peeking through my veil of tears, I saw wet tracks streaking her cheeks.

“Can I pray with you?” At my nod, she prayed. For love, for support, for my well being, but especially the assurance that the Lord Jesus knows and has a plan.

My husband is home with the Lord Jesus now, but I’ll never forget that sweet lady. I give thanks to the Lord for having her in that place at the time I needed someone.

Kingdom Thinking. During these troubled times as we’re stalked by Covid and civil unrest, I give thanks to the Lord Jesus, not because I feel like it, but because of who He is. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me. I don’t know what you’re going through today, but He does. He offers the same promises to you. Won’t you choose Him?

THE FLAVOR OF THANKS

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, we read: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

“In everything?” Timmy tilted his head, bottom lip protruding.

“Even when bad things happen?” He shook his head. “When I don’t feel like it?”

“Yes, son,” Grandfather said. “Now mind you, I didn’t say it was easy but it’s necessary.” He winked.

“I put a Thanks Box on the kitchen table. Each time you follow the Thanks Rule, you’re allowed to open it. What do you say? Ready to try it?”

“I don’t know, Grandfather. Sounds silly to have a Thanks Box. What will my friends say about it?”

Grandfather rubbed the back of his neck. “You don’t have to do it. You decide what’s more important--giving thanks in everything or pleasing your friends.”

“I’ll wait. Okay if I go over to Sam’s?” At Grandfather’s nod, he left.

Later that afternoon, when Timmy came into the kitchen, he jerked to a stop. “Grandfather, is this the Thanks Box on the table? The big one tied with the red ribbon?” He leaned close. “Sure is wrapped nice.”

“There’s one way to find out what’s inside,” Grandfather said as he leaned against the door frame. “Open it. But you must follow the rules.”

Timmy stared at the box. Instead of giving thanks, he turned on his heel but at the kitchen door, he did an about face. “I’m sorry I was stubborn. Thank you for loving me, Grandfather.”

“Let’s check out the Thanks Box. Open it.” Grandfather laughed as Timmy’s face flushed with pleasure.

“All kind of chocolates,” he said. “And I almost missed them.”

“Not all your favorite flavors but they’re chocolate.”

“Umm,” Timmy mumbled, popping a chocolate into his mouth.

Kingdom Thinking. By giving thanks in everything doesn’t mean I manipulate the Lord. The wonderful result of rejoicing and giving thanks is the change in my flavor of thanks--my attitude. The Lord Jesus promises to love me and never leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

POWER WASHING

In 1 John 1:9-10, we read: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”

“Look at my hands.” Timmy held them up..

“You wear dirt like gloves,” Grandfather chuckled. “Definitely need a scrubbing,” He nodded toward the sink.

His grandson grabbed the bar of soap, squeezing it in the water. He splashed, popping bubbles. Dirty suds and water twirled down the drain.

“If your hands are clean, the towel won’t be dirty.” Grandfather handed him a white towel. "Uh-oh. Lots of smudges. Wash them again.”

“I don’t see dirt.” He inspected his hands.

Back at the sink, Grandfather did the washing. “Well,” Grandfather said. “Towel looks clean now. “Good job.”

Timmy tilted his head. “You did the work for me. You used your soap and you washed my hands. Thank you.” He wrapped his arms around grandfather.

“You’re welcome. Often we have dirt in places we can’t reach or forget about.”

“Like under my fingernails?”

“Right. We try to clean ourselves and miss spots others can see but especially God.” Grandfather smiled. Timmy’s eyebrows raised.

“You’re not talking about dirt now?”

“Sin is like dirt. It clings to us and when we try to clean it, residue is left. I was hopeless, lost. Unable to get clean. Then the Lord Jesus came, offered me new life in Him because of His shed blood on the cross.  He declares me clean because I choose to believe in His Power to make all things clean and new.”

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus offers the same wonderful option to you. He loves you with an everlasting love. He promises never to leave nor forsake you. Won’t you accept Him? He waits for you.

TRUE HOPE

In Lamentations 3:22-24, we read: "Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 'The Lord is my portion,' says my soul, Therefore I hope in Him!’”

“How can you say 'God is good?' He takes away everything I love."

Aunt Janie sat on the edge of the bed, took Cing in her arms, let her cry. As the crying turned to hiccups, she handed her a tissue.

"I feel the same at times."

"You do?" Cing reared back, stared at her aunt. "But you're always smiling."

"Everyone goes through pain and suffering. It's not whether we have pain, it's how we deal with it." She propped the pillows so they could get comfortable.

"I don't understand. Why can't life be easy?”

“We wouldn't have a story to tell. It would be 'Once upon a time they lived. The end.”

“That's not a story. Nothing happened.”

“You're right. You need action. And in our life story, things happen and we react. We have our ups and downs. Which story would you prefer. ‘She walked home.’ Or 'She tripped on a rock, fell down, ran home...”

“I get it.” She looked into her aunt’s face. “But I’m still sad.”

“As you should be. You loved Kitty. When you give your love, lose it, an empty place remains.

“I’ve make many mistakes, Cing. But because of the Lord's great mercy, I'm not consumed or destroyed. We are His children and the Lord is always faithful. So I hope in Him!"

"Even when you don't feel like it?"

"Especially when I don't feel like it. So I put my hope in the Lord."

"Thank you, Aunt Janie, for loving me." Aunt Janie hugged her. "I'll hope in the Lord, too."

Kingdom Thinking. What about you? Do you know the Lord's mercies are new every morning? He loves you with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake you. Won't you come to Him?

WHO DO YOU SERVE?

In Exodus 21:2-6, we read: “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years; and in the seventh year he shall go out free and pay nothing...But if the servant plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.”

“Grandfather, do you have an earache?”

“No. Just touching my right earlobe. Want to check the hole.” Timmy frowned.

“I don’t see a hole.” He leaned closer. “Nope. Nothing there.” Grandfather chuckled.

“It’s there, all right. Know about the bondservant, son?” Timmy tilted his head.

“It’s a picture of what the Lord Jesus does for us. He sets us free. Free to choose Him.”

“Isn’t it just a story? I don’t want to be someones servant.” Grandfather leaned back in his chair.

“You don’t want to be just anyone’s servant. You want someone who loves you and will provide for you. That’s what the Lord Jesus did for me, for you.”

“How?”

“I wanted to be honorable. To love my neighbor. The more I tried, the more I failed. I was one miserable somebody.” Timmy smiled.

“But you’re good, Grandfather. Why’d you think you were bad?”

“Why do you say I’m good?”

“You treat folks nice and you're kind...”

“All because Jesus loves me. He paid for my sins, set me free. Like the servant, I love my Master, told Him I wanted to be His. ‘You’re sure?' He asked. Then He brought me to the door because He is the Door. He pierced my ear with an awl, a permanent hole so I serve Him forever. Now I come and go where He sends me.”

“Why the ear?”

“Listening obedience--I hear and obey His voice.”

“I asked the Lord into my life.” Timmy touched his ear. "Do I have a hole?” Grandfather smiled.

Kingdom Thinking. When I understood the Lord Jesus loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me, I sold out to Him. His forever. He offers the same to you. Won’t you choose Him?

DELAYED DREAMS

“So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down before you?’ And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.” Genesis 37:10 (NKJV).

“How would you like to bow down to Sam, to follow his every wish?”

“Grandfather, that’s not fair. He thinks he’s smarter than I am. He always has money and...”

“Timmy, you’re saying you would find it difficult to do?”

“I'd hate it.”

“So did Joseph’s brothers. His colored coat showed his brothers how important he was to Jacob, their father. His brothers made fun of him. But when he told them his dreams that they would bow down to him? They’d had enough. They'd show him.”

“And they sold him into slavery?”

“They did. For twenty shekels of silver. Under the going price.”

“You think they felt bad about selling their brother?” Grandfather shrugged.

“Well, they lied, killed a kid of a goat, dipped Joseph's fancy coat in it’s blood, and brought it to their father--all a big cover-up.

“‘Look what we found.’ Their father recognized it, thought a wild animal had killed Joseph.”

“They never told his father what they’d done?”

“Not for many years. I believe they were sorry but scared to do anything about it.”

“Would they get a chance later?” Grandfather smiled.

“Timmy, our Gracious God is Good and always gives second chances. You can depend on Him.”

“What about the dreams?”

“All in God’s timing, Timmy. What appears delayed to us, is God’s perfect timing.”

Kingdom Thinking. I must remember the Lord Jesus is always on time, never in a rush. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He is on time with you, too. Won’t you come to Him? He loves you.

DON’T LOOK DOWN!

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you shall fine rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-30.  (NKJV).

“Timmy, use the bridge.” Instead he ran past the bridge, stepped on a log that stretched to the other side of the stream. He grinned at Grandfather, balancing with his arms as he stepped forward.

“Easy-peasy, Grandfather and lot more fun...

“Help. I’m falling.”

“Timmy. Look at me.”

Grandfather stretched his hand towards Timmy. “Little bit farther. Don’t. Look. Down.”

Timmy’s foot pushed against the log as he lounged for Grandfather. The log slipped, splashed into the water-filled stream. But Grandfather caught Timmy in his arms, hugged him tight. Timmy looked over his shoulder, saw the log twisting and rolling in the current.

“I thought the log would be safe.” He looked at Grandfather. “I was scared.” Grandfather smiled.

“You’re safe now. Did the walk on the log prove something?”

“I wanted to see if I could do it.” He shivered. “It didn’t look bad from the other side but halfway out, I...”

“Maybe the Lord wants you to learn from this. Remember our verse this morning?” Timmy nodded.

“The ‘Come’ verse?”

“That’s the one. Our Lord Jesus is always there. Sometimes we think He’s there because we call Him. But He’s there because He loves us. He knows we like to think we’re strong and able to do...”

“Like me? When I thought I could walk across the stream by myself?”

“Exactly. But He’s aways there. All you need to do is call on Him. He’ll catch you.”

Kingdom Thinking. Instead of Kingdom Thinking, many times I world think. So I must choose to rest in the Lord Jesus, believe His promises. He’ll never leave nor forsake me and He loves me with an everlasting love. He offers the same to you. Dion’t look down. Look up. He’ll catch you.

THE TRUST OF A LITTLE CHILD!

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.’” Matthew 18:1-4 (KJV).

“How can I be a little child? Most of the time you tell me to grow up and act my age.” Grandfather chuckled.

“Timmy, when I say grow up, I’m saying don’t be childish. There’s a difference in childlike and childish.”

“Childish like when I got mad with Sam and slammed the door when I stomped in?” Grandfather chuckled.

“Usually when you don’t get your way,” he smiled.

“Timmy, remember when the Hill's adopted their little son? Mrs. Hill had never seen him. Scared, questions flooded her mind--how if he didn’t like her? How if he wouldn’t come to her?

“But, she said the doubts fled when he stretched his little arms to her, clinging as if he'd finally come home. Said she would forever feel those little arms slide around her neck.”

“He loves his mom and dad.”

“You’re right. Why?”

“I guess he trusts them. He knows they love him, too.”

“And that’s what the Lord Jesus offers us. The love and security in His love. Once we realize how much He loves us, we trust Him.”

Timmy tilted his head. “It’s hard to trust Him when I’ve never seen him.” He paused, his face brightening. “Oh, like when the Hill’s got their son? He’d never seen her but he loved her?”

“Exactly. She asked nothing of him. Just loved and nurtured him.”

Kingdom Thinking. I’m grateful the Lord Jesus gives pictures of His great love. I was terrified our son wouldn’t love me. But at the airport, seeing me for the first time, he stretched out his arms, came to me. Now when troubles come, I choose to remember the Lord loves me the same way. He promises never to  forsake me and love me with an everlasting love. He offers the same to you. Won’t you trust Him?

THE INVITATION

In Matthew 11:28-30, we read: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

“Mail, Grandfather.” Timmy waved an envelope, handed it to him. “Fancy writing, too.”

“That fancy writing is called calligraphy, Timmy. Beautiful, isn’t it?”

“Aren’t you going to open it?” Timmy hovered. “I want to see what it is."

“Not now. I’ll leave it on the kitchen table. We can look at the beautiful writing from time to time.”

“But Grandfather, we won’t know what’s in it if we don’t open it.”

“True. Okay, let’s open it!” Breaking the seal, he took out an invitation. “We’re invited to your uncle’s wedding.”

“That’ll be fun. Will my cousins be there?”

“Hope so except receiving an invitation doesn’t guarantee they’ll accept and be there.”

“Why not? They’ll miss out.”

“By the way, Timmy. Did you see the invitation on your bedside table?” Eyes wide, Timmy ran upstairs.

“There’s no invitation, just my Bible.” He came downstairs, shoulders drooping.

“You missed it?" Timmy’s forehead wrinkled. “You have an invitation from the King of Kings to come to Him. He invites you but it’s up to you to respond.”

“Oh. I never thought about it like that. Is it too late to accept His invitation?”

“Not at all.”

“Just think, Grandfather. I have two invitations. One to my cousin’s wedding. One from the King. Know what? I’m accepting both of them.” Grandfather smiled.

“Good choice, Timmy. That’s one you’ll never regret.”

Kingdom Thinking. I received an invitation from the Lord Jesus. He promises to give me rest. He’ll never leave nor forsake me and He loves me with an everlasting love. He offers His invitation to you. Won’t you come?

A TRUE FRIEND

In Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, we read: “Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.

“Come quick, Grandfather.” Face flushed, Timmy put his hands on his knees to catch his breath. “Need your help.”

“What’s the trouble?”

“Bobby’s hurt, scared. Fell out of the tree.”

“And he’s...”

“In the apple orchard,” Timmy completed Grandfather's sentence.

“Hop in the truck.” At the orchard, Grandfather ran to Bobby. “Arm hurts bad, huh?” Bobby nodded. “Easy now.”  Grandfather lifted him into the truck, drove to the Emergency Room.

“He climbed high in the apple tree, a limb broke, and he fell.” Timmy dipped his head. “Is it my fault?” Grandfather shook his head but before he could explain, the doctor walked over.

“He’s a lucky boy. Broke his ulna but it’s a clean brake. Are you the responsible party?”

“I couldn’t reach his parents, left a message. I’ll care for  him and see he gets home.” A voice caught his attention. “There’s his mom now.” The situation explained, an unhappy Bobby went home with his mom.

“That was dumb to climb so high, huh?” Timmy asked.

“I’ve climbed higher than I should. Too many times. Taken too many chances. Without a friend watching out for me. Thought I was all alone.

Remember this, Timmy. We have a Friend, the Lord Jesus, who is always with us.” He cleared his throat, patted Timmy on the shoulder.

Kingdom Thinking. I discovered my Friend, the Lord Jesus, has been there all along. The Lord Jesus loves me and promises never to leave me. He takes the worst things in my life, puts them in His Holy Recycling Bin, under heat and pressure, and uses them for His Glory and my good. He can do the same for you. Won’t you come?

EYES WIDE OPEN

“And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, ‘Do you believe that I am able to to this?” They said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord.’ Then He touched their eyes, saying, ‘According to your faith let it be to you.’ And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, ‘See that no one knows it.’”   Matthew 9:28-30a  (NKJV).

“Grandfather, did the Lord Jesus really touch them? And they could see?”

“He did.”

“But if they were blind, how did they know the Lord Jesus?”

“Maybe they followed the crowd to the house. They knew they needed new eyes, believed the Lord could give them sight.” Timmy tilted his head.

“Why hadn’t He given the new eyes before? He knew they needed them. I don’t understand.”

“Remember when you knotted up the cord to your kite?” Timmy nodded. “I watched and the more you tried the more tangled--let’s just say it was a mess.” Grandfather chuckled.

“Finally I asked for help and you said, ‘You sure you want my help?’ I handed it to you and you untangled it.”

“Right. You had to want my help and believe I could untangle the cord.

“The Lord Jesus wants us to trust Him, to believe in Him. When the blind men said they believed, He touched their eyes, said, ‘According to your faith let it be to you.’ And you know what?” Timmy shrugged.

“Their eyes were opened. Can you imagine? Blind one minute, seeing the next. Then He warned them to tell no one about this.”

“Why?”

“Our Lord Jesus loves us and wants us to come to Him, not for what we can get from Him...” Grandfather’s uplifted palm stopped Timmy’s question. “But so our faith in Him can grow. He wants us to love Him and share His love.”

Kingdom Thinking.  My eyes couldn’t see the important things in life. Then The Lord Jesus came. He touched me and allowed me to see He loves me and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. “According to your faith, let it be to you.” Won’t you come?

TRULY RICH!

“Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ So Jesus said to him, ‘You know the commandments. And he said, ‘All these things I have kept from my youth.’” Luke 18:18-20. (NKJV)

“I hope this is an exciting story like David and his mighty men.” Grandfather looked over the top of his glasses. “Sorry. I’ll listen.” Timmy plopped on the stool by Grandfather’s chair, shoulders slumped.

“A young man came to Jesus, asked how to inherit eternal life. The Lord Jesus looked at him, said, ‘You know the commandments.’

“‘I’ve kept all those since I was young,’ the young man said.” Timmy sat straight, cocked his head.

“‘Sell everything you have, give it to the poor, and follow me.’ And you know what?” Timmy shook his head. “He left. He couldn’t do it for he was very rich.”

        “He was selfish?”

“No more than you or me, Timmy.”

“If I had a lot of money, I’d give to the Lord.” Timmy’s chest puffed.

“How much money do you have, Timmy?”

“I’m saving for a new bike. Remember? You said you’d meet me half way.”

“Why don’t you give half of it...”

“But Grandfather, it’ll take forever to save my share.” Timmy tilted his head. “Money was the young man’s favorite?” Grandfather smiled, nodded.

“It’s wrong to be rich or have toys?”

“No, Timmy. But we must be careful our love for things isn't more powerful than our love for the Lord. He gives us all things--to be shared with others. Then we're truly rich.”

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus knows my heart and loves me anyway. He knows the things I value and put before Him and He's in the process of showing me what’s important in the Kingdom. He wants to do the same for you. He loves you and will never leave you. Won’t you come to Him?

ARE YOU WILLING?

In Matthew 8:2-3, we read: “And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.’ Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, ’I am willing; be cleansed.’ Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.”

“Timmy. Let me tell you about it. You decide.” Grandfather sat in his chair.

"Eli came from the field, holding his arm against his chest. ‘I bruised it, Naomi. Nothing to worry about,’ he said to his wife. The next morning, in pain, he insisted he complete his work. Another night of sleeplessness. Something had to be done. 'I’ll go to the priest.’

“The priest took one look. ‘Leprosy. You must leave--live in the leper’s cave.'

“‘Please, let me tell my children goodbye.’ The priest pointed in the direction of the cave. Shoulders slumped, Eli walked away. To live a life of painful exile.

“Naomi and the children brought food, left it on the rock by the cave. The children grew up, married, left home. Still, Naomi came.

“‘Have you heard, Eli? The rabbi is coming. They say he heals the sick, even raises the dead. Let’s go hear him,’ Naomi said.

“‘I can’t be near healthy people.' How if? He didn’t dare answer the  question. He went. In the company of the excited people, they didn’t notice him.

"Eli ran to the rabbi, fell down and worshiped Him. ‘If you are willing, Lord, you can make me clean.' The Lord Jesus touched him. ‘I’m willing. Do not  tell anyone, but to go to the priest, and offer the sacrifice required by Moses.'”

Kingdom Thinking. Infected with the leprosy of sin, the festering sores of unforgiveness, jealousy, and (you fill the blank) didn’t work. Then the Lord Jesus came. He said to me, “I’m willing. I’ll take your place. Only the healing power of My blood can wash you clean, make you new.”

The Lord Jesus stands before you and offers His everlasting love and forgiveness. He will cleanse you. He is willing. Are you? You decide.

HIDDEN!

In Psalm 17:8-9, we read: “Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, From the wicked who oppress me, From my deadly enemies who surround me.”

“I’m ugly, Grandfather.” Janie stood before the hall mirror, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“Why would you think such a thing?”

She looked at the reflection of Grandfather behind her. “I can see. Besides, everybody says so.”

“Did you hurt someone’s feelings?” She shook her head. “Make fun of you?” She rolled her lips. “What's this really about?” Grandfather knelt by her, took her hand.

“Cause. Cause I have freckles.” She stretched out her arm. “Everywhere.” She flung her arms around Grandfather.

“But I love your freckles. Grandmother has freckles. That’s why I married her. Freckles show that you’re not perfect but you’re my Granddaughter.” Fingers under her chin, he lifted Janie's face.

“You’re supposed to say that. You’re my grandfather.”

“Hold on a sec.” Grandfather slipped on his overcoat, came back to Janie. “Okay. Step this way.” He tucked her inside. “If someone comes in, who do they see?”

“They see you. I’m hidden.” She hiccuped.

“Exactly. But are you still alive? Able to think for yourself?”

“Course.  I’m still me. You’re funny, Grandfather.”

“The Lord Jesus hides us under His wings when we belong to Him, Janie. Our enemies continue to surround us and the wicked oppress us but we have the assurance the Lord is with us.”

He opened his overcoat, peeped inside. “Feel safe?” Grinning, she nodded.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus promises not only to provide for me but to never forsake me. He loves me with an everlasting love. He sees my problems, no matter the size, as an opportunity to show He can handle them. He offers the same to you. Who do you see in the mirror? He’ll hid you under His wings. Won’t you come to Him?

THE THANKFUL HEART

In Luke 17:12-14b, 15, we read: “Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!' He said to them, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. And one of then, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving thanks. And he was a Samaritan.”

“Grandfather, why did only one of the ten lepers come back and thank Him?”

“We're like that, Timmy. Not many of us have thankful hearts. We ask when we’re in trouble but don’t take the time to thank the Lord.” A knock at the back door interrupted them.

“I”ll get it,” Timmy opened the door. “Johnny. What happened to you?”

“Come in, Johnny,” Grandfather said, pulling on his right ear lobe, ignoring the bruise on Johnny’s face. Timmy knew the signal. Ask no questions.

“Would you join Timmy and me for a snack? And bring in the others, too.” Heads down, his two little sisters, five and three years old, followed. Seating them at the kitchen table, Grandfather made them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and poured glasses of milk.

“I’m so glad to see you, Johnny. And you, Susan and little Lilly.”

“Grandfather, tell us a story.”

“Only if you’ll help me.” He looked from one to the other. With mouths full, each nodded. The story, in full Grandfather-story-mode, had them laughing.

“Guess we have to get home.” As Johnny headed for the door, Grandfather handed him a basket.

“A few vegetables from my garden. Had a large crop this year. Don’t want them to go to waste.” Johnny took the basket, nodded his thanks, but little Lilly ran to Grandfather, gave him a big hug.

After they left, Timmy threw his arms around Grandfather. “I love you. Thank you. But most of all, I thank the Lord Jesus who gave me to you.”

Kingdom Thinking. I don’t know which of the ten lepers describe you, but most times, I’m one of the nine--glad for what I get, but not with a thankful heart. The Lord Jesus healed all ten. He gave them a new life. He promises the same to you. He loves you and will never forsake you. Won’t you come to Him?

KINDNESS THAT COUNTS

In 2 Samuel 9:3, we read: “Then the king said, ‘Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God?' And Ziba said to the king, ‘There is a still a son of Jonathan who is lame in his feet.'”

“Life isn’t fair, Grandfather.” Timmy slumped on the sofa.

“You’re not the first to think so.” He sat next to Timmy.

“Mephibosheth’s father was Jonathan and his grandfather, King Saul.”

“Bet he had a cushy life.” Grandfather held up his hand.

“Heir to the throne, he did for a while. But King Saul and Jonathan died in battle and David was anointed king. Because of Saul’s hatred for David, everyone fled. As the nursemaid ran with Mephibosheth, she dropped him, causing him to be crippled. They fled to Lo Debar in the desert and he had a steady diet of ‘hate David--if he finds you, he’ll kill you.’

“One day the watch-out yelled. ‘Someone’s coming.’ A speck of dust grew into a cloud. Riders. Coming to Lo Debar, the place of nothing.

“‘We come for Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan. King David’s orders,’ one said.

"In the king’s presence, he threw down his crutches and fell on his face.

“‘Mephibosheth,’ the king said. ‘Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather.’

“‘Why? I am nothing.’

“‘As for Mephibosheth,’ said the king, ‘he shall eat at my table like one of my sons.’ So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem and ate at the king’s table. And he was lame in both feet.”

“Grandfather, Mephibosheth hated David. How could he be kind to him? Grandfather smiled.

“He showed the kindness of God, son. Shouldn’t we do the same?”

Kingdom thinking. I’m crippled, broken. My feet take me places I don’t want to go, yet you, Lord,  invite me to sit at your table? How marvelous to know God, the Father, accepts me because of what His Son, the Lord Jesus (my Jonathan), has done. He offers the same invitation to you. He loves you and promises never to forsake you. Won’t you come?

THE RAT ROOM

“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’”  John 8:31-32 (NKJV).

“Imagine. Giant rats. Long teeth. Red eyes and they lived in the bedroom at the top of the stairs.”

“Grandfather, sounds like a scary movie.” Timmy grinned.

“When John and I visited our grandparent's home,” Grandfather continued, “We’d reach the top of the stairs, then race to our room at the end of the hall.”

“How old were you guys?” Grandfather grinned.

“Ten years old. We'd heard tales about the rat room all our lives.” Grandfather’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Keep Out was tacked on the door.” He leaned towards Timmy. “One day we decided to find out if the story was true.

“Bored due to the rain keeping us in our room, we waited until the grownups were downstairs in the den. I poked my head out, all quiet so we sneaked into the room.

“The door slammed. John grabbed my arm. Shadows against the drawn shades danced as lightning slashed, followed by growls of thunder. Boxes lined the shelves and a trunk, tucked in the
, held a large cage covered by a sheet.”

“A cage of rats?” Timmy leaned forward.

“Nope. Empty. Shoulders slumped, we slipped out but as we opened the door, Uncle Robert leaned against the wall, his arms crossed.”

“‘Find anything interesting?’ He grinned. ‘Know how the room got its name? My sister’s boyfriend gave her white mice. They escaped from the cage so many times, she gave them back,’ he said, lips twitching.”

“But Grandfather, I thought...”

“I know. Incorrect information affects us. John and I nearly broke our necks running by the rat room before we learned the truth. The truth can set us free. Our Lord tells us so in His word.”

Kingdom Thinking. During this pandemic of Covid 19, we hear offers of false cures, confusing theories about the virus--many creating fear. As a follower of the Lord Jesus, He promises me truth for He is Truth. He loves me and will never leave me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

THE SWAP

In 2 Corinthians 5:21, we read: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

“Grandfather. Sam's dad invited us to go to the car show Saturday morning.” He gave a thumbs up.

At the show, Timmy pointed, “Check out that red sports car."

“Have a seat inside, fellows,” the owner urged. They took turns sitting under the wheel.

“Man, this car's made for racing.” Low slung to hug the curves, bright fire-engine red, the inside provided every feature imaginable.

“Let’s look under the hood,” Grandfather walked to the car.

“First check out the safety precautions. Special tires, the reinforced roll bar...”

“How many horses? Pop the hood.” Sam’s dad said.

Gasps. A new engine but no battery or spark plugs--all the safety features in the world but powerless--incapable of fulfilling its purpose.

“Can you believe it, Grandfather? The outside looked perfect, so I thought...” Grandfather put his arm around Timmy.

“A disappointment, son, but look at this as a lesson in life. You couldn’t tell something was missing. A lot of people are like this.” Timmy’s brow wrinkled.

“They keep up the paint job, appear all is well but lack the power source of life--The Lord Jesus.”

“What can we do about it?”

“We share the Lord Jesus by our actions and words.” Grandfather held up his hand. “During this time of the Covid 19 pandemic, folks are scared. They feel powerless. They need to hear God loves them and wants to empower them with His love.”

“So be kind?” Grandfather smiled.

“That’s a great place to start.”

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus, who knew no sin, swapped places with me, took my sin, nailed it to the cross, and became my power source. He declared me righteous in Him, not because of who I am or what I did. He promises to love me forever. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

THE SACRIFICE

In Luke 2:22, we read: “Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

“But I thought Jesus is God.” Grandfather nodded. “Then why present Him to the Lord in Jerusalem?”

“The law stated every male who opens the womb or firstborn, would belong to and be holy to God. His parents fulfilled the law by presenting Him to the Lord.”

“So the sacrifice was for Him?” Grandfather shook his head, Timmy sighed, “This is hard to understand.” Grandfather smiled.

“The sacrifice was for the new mother. She would offer a pair of turtledoves and be declared ceremonially clean.”

“Wait, Grandfather. I thought the Lord Jesus was the sacrifice for sin.”

“You’re right. But this was before He died on the cros. Think about it. Mary had to offer a sacrifice for her sins. All she could afford were two turtledoves, while in her arms, she held the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world.”

Silence.

“Mighty quiet, Timmy.”

“Just thinking. It’s awesome when you realize what the Lord Jesus did and there’s a whole lot I don't understand.”

Grandfather nodded, put his arm around Timmy’s shoulders. “We don’t have to understand, but one thing we can do? Offer Him the Gift of Praise and Thanksgiving. He knows our hearts.”

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus provided the way by offering Himself as a sacrifice for my sins. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same  to you. Won’t you come to Him?

NO BATTERIES REQUIRED!

In John 1:3-5, we read: “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

“I don’t understand Grandfather.” Timmy plopped in the kitchen chair.

“Remember your nightmares when you were little?” He nodded. “What happened?” Timmy grinned.

“You'd charge into my room and turn on the light and chase the darkness away.” He chuckled. “Then you'd shine your big flashlight under my bed and in the closet and all the dark places.”

“How'd  you feel?”

“Safe. I wasn’t scared any more. I kept your flashlight to shine anytime I needed, but--the batteries burned out.”

“Son, the Lord Jesus did that for us when He came to earth and took on the form of a man. He is Light, the Light of the world. For those who believe, His Light comes into them to stay. Forever. He’s real. We don’t need batteries. But most folks don’t believe Him.”

“Why? Makes no sense. Don’t they know He came to shine His Light so they won't be scared?”

“Some do. But others, instead of believing Him, choose to stay in their darkness.”

Kingdom Thinking. I knew about the Lord Jesus, sang about Him, even prayed to Him when I needed something. But I didn't allow His Light to come in and fill my life. He’s a gentleman and never forces Himself. Finally in desperation, I fell to my knees and invited Him to come in.

The Lord Jesus promises to never forsake me and loves me with everlasting love. He promises the same to you.Won’t you come to Him? He waits for you.

THE FOREVER DEGREE

In II Corinthians 5:20-21, we read: “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us; we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

“You graduated from college? Where? When?” Grandfather held up his hand.

“Timmy? You know the answers.”

“I want Sam to hear. Especially your Forever Degree.”

“Oh. Got it.” Grandfather faced Sam. “BS in Biology, 1959. Masters in Biology in 1962,” he grinned. “Masters in Eternal Life--The Forever Degree. A work in progress.’ Sam’s eyes widened.

“Son, if the Lord Jesus loved me enough to leave heaven and come to earth as a man, that’s love. If He loves me enough to die on the cross with my sins nailing Him there, that’s amazing love. If He loves me enough to rise from the dead for me, that’s more than amazing love. But He didn’t stop there.”

“He didn’t?” Sam tilted his head, brow furrowed.

“Nope. He ascended into Heaven, presented His blood as a sacrifice to the Heavenly Father, who accepted it, and declared me, mind you, me, righteous.”

“But you didn’t do anything,” Sam whispered.

“Right. But He didn’t stop there.” Sam leaned forward on the sofa, elbows on his knees.

“When I confessed my sin to the Lord, He washed me clean, came to live in my heart, never to leave.”

“Wish he could love me but I’ve done some bad things.” Sam dipped his head.

“Good news, Sam, the Lord Jesus included you. But...”

“I knew there’d be a catch to it.”

Grandfather held up his hand, palm out. “He knows all about you and loves you. He wants you in His Master’s program--the Forever Degree--a work in progress. But He’s a gentleman and won’t force Himself on you.”

“Me? He loves me?” Grandfather nodded, pulled Sam into his arms.

Kingdom Thinking. I stand amazed when I realize what the Lord Jesus did for me. He promises never to leave nor forsake me. He loves me with an everlasting love. He promises the same to you. Please come.

GREATER THAN MY HEART?

“For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.” 1 John 3:20 (NKJV)

“I messed up, Grandfather. You’ll be embarrassed...”

“What happened?” Grandfather sat by Timmy, put his arm around his shoulder.

“I was helping Mrs. Elliot carry her groceries to her house. She handed me a bag but it slipped.” His shoulders slumped. “Stuff went everywhere.”

“Anything break?”

“A few cans rolled under the car. I crawled under, grabbed them.”

“Okay. And then?”

"Well," he dipped his head. "I stood up, snagged my jeans pocket. Ripped it off. Mrs. Elliott stood with her hands on her hips. ‘Can I trust you to unload my groceries?’

“Sam and Johnny rode their bikes by. They yelled and laughed--made me mad.”

"So what'd you do?” Grandfather’s lips twitched.

“I said I would unload her groceries so I finished the job.” He tilted his head. “Why'd I mess up? I was trying to help."

“You did help. Did she smile? Probably gave her something to chuckle about all day.” Head tilted and eyebrows raised, Timmy grinned.

"Yep. And she gave me lemonade and cookies. But...?"

"Son. You disappointed yourself--your heart’s condemning you, not the Lord.”

“You asked Jesus to come in, to save you at camp, right?” He nodded.

“Your goodness can't save you. The Lord Jesus did. So your badness can’t lose you.” Timmy’s forehead creased. “The Lord Jesus knew all about you when He bought you, made you His own.”

Timmy's face brightened. “Thank you, Grandfather.”

Kingdom Thinking. God is greater than my heart. When He forgives me, it’s a done deal. He knows all about me. He promises never to leave nor forsake me and loves me with an everlasting love. Do you realize God is greater than your heart? He loves you. Won't you come to Him?

WHO WRITES THE CHECKS?

In Philippians 4:19-20, we read: “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

“Are we rich, Grandfather?”

“Absolutely. We have wealth we don’t know about.” He put his glasses on his Bible.

“How can we be rich and not know it?” Timmy sat on a stool by Grandfather’s chair.

“Years ago, I made a trip to Honduras. While there, I got a call from my father. Mother was ill. He needed me at home. I left Tegucigalpa and flew into Miami International Airport in the late afternoon. The next flight didn’t leave for South Carolina until five o’clock the next morning.”

“So you spent the night in a hotel near the airport?” Timmy scooted closer.

“The Airport Hotel had a room but when I opened my wallet--not enough cash. Head down, I shuffled to the waiting area. I have to spend the night here? I plopped on the seat.

“Wait a minute. I have a wonderful Lord. I'd focused on me long enough. I’m sorry, Lord. Then I remembered..."

“What? What did you remember?” Timmy moved to the arm of Grandfather’s chair.

“Travelers Checks. In my secure pocket. I’d bought them in case of emergency.”

“So you got a good night’s sleep and made it home? And your Mother?”

“When I walked into the hospital room, she was glad to see me. She recovered and I learned an important lesson.” Timmy leaned close.

“The Lord knows and supplies my needs. He writes the checks. Remember that, Timmy.”

“I will, Grandfather.”

Kingdom Thinking. According to His Riches in glory, the Lord Jesus provides for me. During this time of Covid 19, I remind myself He knows my heart and my needs. He promises never to forsake me and He loves me with an everlasting love. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come to Him?

UP TO DATE!

“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’” John 4:13-14 (NKJV).

“Your stories are old-fashioned.” Timmy slid down in his chair. Grandfather flipped the pages of his Bible.

“Listen to this one. It's up-to-date.”

Nearing the well, she heard the shuffle of feet. A man sat there. He looks tired. Maybe he won’t notice me. I’ll draw water and leave. She pulled her shawl close.

“Give me a drink.” Her head snapped up. She stared into His eyes, then lowered her gaze.

“You, a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan? Jews don’t deal with Samaritans.”

“If you knew who was asking, you could ask Him and He would give you Living Water.” She glanced around.

“You have nothing to draw with and this well is deep. Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well?”

“Ah, but who drinks this water will thirst again. I'm offering water that will quench your thirst, a fountain of water that springs up into everlasting life.”

“Sir, please give me this water.” To never thirst? How great was that? He asked her to call her husband. “I have no husband,” her chin rose.

“You’re right. You've had five husbands, and the one you’re now with is not your husband.”

Perceiving Him a prophet, she sat at His feet as He explained the Father seeks those who will worship Him. For God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. “I know Messiah is coming. When He comes He will tell us all things.”

“I who speak to you am He.” She believed Him and wanted to share the Good News.

“Why did it take her so long to know who He was?”

Grandfather smiled. “We humans are a stubborn lot. We want proof. I ignored His Truths but when I looked into His face and saw His love for me, I surrendered to Him. He loves me! Amazing.

Kingdom Thinking. No matter who you are, He offers you the same love and compassion. A fountain of living water that springs into everlasting life. He promises never to leave nor forsake you. Won’t you come to Him?

THE OVERFLOWING CUP

In Psalm 23:5-6, we read: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

“So why would he be excited about his cup running over? It would cause a mess.”

Grandfather chuckled. “Indeed but things are not as they appear. Let me get on with the story.”

"The guest sat at the table waiting...waiting to see the outcome of the visit. He didn’t deserve the friendship of his Host. ‘I should not have come,’ he thought. ‘But desperate times require desperate measures.’

"He remembered the many times he’d been curt, downright nasty.  He left him on the road after finding him robbed and beaten. He thought the man unclean and passed on the far side. He failed to help him on his way to the temple when he saw him begging. ‘He...what’s the use? He’ll never accept me. I don’t deserve him as a friend. If only I could undo the past.’

“Dinner over, the guest watched as his host reached for his empty cup and began to fill it, slowly but surely. A half full cup would be dismissal--no words need be spoken.

“One quarter full, half full, then overflowing. He looked up into the face of his host, saw the look of acceptance but more than that? He saw a smile start in his eyes and transform His face. The smile beamed light that filled him, including him as family.”

“Explain Grandfather. I don’t get it.”

“When the Lord Jesus came, He prepared the table before me in the presence of my enemies. He anointed my head with oil; My cup runs over. And don’t miss this. Surely, not maybe, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

“But I know what I’ve done. I don’t feel like I’m worthy.”

“Has nothing to do with feelings, son. We’re dealing with reality here.”

Kingdom Thinking. This is not a matter of what I deserve. It's a gift, freely given from the Lord Jesus Christ. He prepares, He anoints, He fills. He promises never to leave me and love me with an everlasting love. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come to Him?

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!

In John 17:20, we read: “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one.”

“Morning, Grandfather.” Timmy plopped on the stool, propped his chin on his hand.

“Have something on your mind?” Timmy nodded.

“Sam told me there’s no God. He said somebody made the whole thing up.”

Grandfather removed his glasses. “What do you think?”

“I thought I knew. Now I’m not sure.”

Grandfather leaned back in his chair. “Want to hear a story?” Timmy nodded.

“The boy was about your age with the same questions. He decided he would go to his secret place in the woods--his thinking place. A rabbit ran across his path. Then he watched a squirrel run up a tree, a nut in his mouth. Before he knew it, rays of the sunlight slipped behind the trees. Still he had no answer.

He noticed a glowing light creating a pathway. He’d go that way home. As he neared the light, he heard a voice.

“I know you.” He looked around, didn’t see anyone. “You are mine. Trust me.” Then he saw Him, but especially the hands--nail-pierced.

“You’re real.” The man in shining white nodded. The boy fell at his feet. Timmy sat up straight.

“Grandfather, were you that boy?” Grandfather smiled, a tear trickled down his face.

Kingdom Thinking. It’s difficult to fathom the depth of the love of the Lord Jesus. He prayed for me before He was arrested in the garden. Before He was crucified and rose from the dead. He loves me and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He loves you. Won’t you come to Him?

THE GOOD SHEPHERD

In John 10:14-15, we read: “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.”

Old Bessie
Janie slipped down the back steps, made her way to the lot. "If I’m quiet maybe old Bessie won’t hear me.” Easing the gate shut, she switched the basket to her other hand. Feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs should take no time.

"So far, so good.” She bent down to go in the henhouse and that’s when she heard hoof-beats--getting louder.

Wham! Janie fumed as she lay sprawled on the ground, barnyard stuff clinging to her clothes. Old Bessie won again.

"I thought sheep were special.” She yelled at Bessie. The old sheep had the audacity to appear pleased.

Chuckling brought a flush to her face. Grandfather leaned on the gate, his arms crossed. “Never underestimate the power of an old sheep, Janie. You don't depend on the sheep, but on the shepherd.

“In the flock you have every kind of sheep imaginable--soft cuddly ones but also tough ones. Some are old and crippled and some just downright ornery.”

“Like old Bessie?” He walked over, offered Janie his hand.

“Yes. The flock of our Lord Jesus is the same.” She squinted at him. “Every type of personality. When I came to know Him, I thought all of His believers would be the same--likeminded and easy to love.

“Found out that’s not always the case. The Lord teaches us through the lives and efforts of each other. No need for all to be the same. Sometimes we’re not nice or fun to be around. But we are His flock.”

“Do I have to love old Bessie?” Grandfather chuckled, Janie giggled.

Kingdom Thinking. The one thing the flock has in common--sheep with a shepherd. Once we are brought into the fold, we belong to the Lord Jesus. He is the Good Shepherd. He loves us and promises never to forsakes us. He is with us when the flock is threatened, be it the Covid 19 virus or an unforgiving spirit. Won’t you come to Him? He loves you.

LIFTED UP!

In Isaiah 40:31, we read: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

“Grandfather, look.” Timmy pointed to a bald eagle soaring on the thermals. “Looks easy, huh?”

“An amazing bird, Timmy. He was born to soar--didn’t have to take a course in it.” They watched  the eagle circle with the greatest of ease. “How’d you like to fly like that?”

“I wish! You can see the whole world from up there.” They watched the eagle dive to the lake. He hovered, plucked a fish with its talons, and ascended, the fish flapping.

“Probably taking a meal to his young in the nest. He watches over the fledglings. Makes sure they’re provided for.”

“Do the young look like the parent?” Timmy squinted, watching the bird fly towards a tall pine.

“They’re dark brown but mottled, won’t have the coloring of the parent for about five years.” He turned to his grandson. “You have characteristics of your parents and me now,” Grandfather chuckled. “But when you’re an adult, they’ll be more pronounced."

“What’s that got to do with the Bible verse?” Grandfather smiled.

“Like the eagle, the Lord watches over us. He feeds us His Word to nourish us. When we get tired, He swoops down, lifts us up.”

“When did He do that for me?” Timmy’s lips tightened.

“More than you realize. He works through those around you. Sometimes in the most unexpected places, He provides for your needs. Want to know why?” Timmy nodded.

“Because He loves us more than we can imagine. He asks us to wait on Him so He can renew our strength.” Timmy’s face brightened, a huge smile on his face.

Kingdom Thinking. During this time of the Covid 19 pandemic, I choose to remember the Lord Jesus provides for me. He is my strength. He loves me with an everlasting love and He promises never to leave nor forsake me. Do you need to be lifted up today? Call on Him.

STUCK IN THE MUCK--UNFORGETTABLE!

In Psalm 40:3, we read: “He has put a new song in my mouth--praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.”

“Grandfather. We need to get going.”

“Couldn’t go without these, Timmy.” Holding up his binoculars, he got into the truck. “I want Vera and Tom to see our beautiful waterways in a way they’ll never forget.”

“Grew up here with you, remember?” Tom chuckled. “But this is a special treat.”

Finally launched, the Blue Jay, a sixteen footer, zipped along the channel. Timmy leaned back to enjoy the ride. Gulls soared, a blue heron flew out of the marsh, croaking his raspy disapproval. Suddenly showers of pluff mud pelted them and the boat skidded to a stop.

“What happened?” Vera said.

Grandfather dipped his head. “Should’ve watched the channel markers. The high tide covered a swarth of pluff mud with a few inches of water.”

“Don’t worry, Grandfather. I’ll get out and push.” Timmy jumped out, sunk up to his armpits. He pushed, the boat wobbled in a circle. Grandfather and Tom jumped out to help--same circle. Stuck in the muck.

“We need your help, my dear,” Tom said to Vera.

“But I have on a white bathing suit.” She sighed. “All right. Eww. Something is touching me in this oozy stuff and it stinks.” Her lips trembled. “We’re trapped. The mud has won.”

“Let’s pray,” Grandfather bowed his head.

“Not much use,” Tom commented. “Tide’s going out.”

As Grandfather prayed a breeze of encouragement caressed the sweaty faces.

“Push,” Timmy yelled. The boat slipped off the mud flat and into the channel. He pumped his arm in the air. “All right!”

“You’ve done it,” Tom said. “We’ve seen these waterways in a way we’ll never forget.” Everybody laughed.

Kingdom Thinking. When life presents surprises and uses a shiny exterior to disguise objects below the surface, I get stuck in the muck. Not my God. He knows I need to see Him at work--to know that He keeps His promises. He will never leave me and loves me forever. Therefore He gets the glory and He puts a new song of praise in my mouth. He offers the same promise to you. Won’t you come to Him?
