THE HEART OF A LITTLE CHILD

In Psalm 119:30-32, we read: “I have chosen the way of truth; Your judgments I have laid before me. I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord, do not put me to shame! I will run the course of Your commandments, For You shall enlarge my heart.”

“Grandfather. Does Aunt Sue ever smile?”

“She’s been like that most of her life.” He shook his head, squinting. “Wades through life miserable and uncaring.” He tilted his head. “I have to admit she excels at it, too.”

The front door slammed. “Uh oh, Grandfather said. "I think she heard us.” Color drained from Timmy’s face. They watched from the window as she made a bee line for the park.

“I’ll wait a minute, then go and apologize.”

Sue stomped to a park bench, plopped down. How could her brother treat her so? She fumed as different scenarios ran through her mind. Her problems, all of the hurts she’d endured. Nobody understood or cared.

“Are you dying?” a little boy whispered as he stood by her. He clutched his teddy bear, one with a large red heart on the chest.“You can hug my bear. He helps take my pain away.”

Startled she stared at the boy. Maybe five years old, his complexion pale with circles under his eyes. He thought she was dying?

“Mercy me,” she said, tears pooling. She accepted the bear’s hug, returned it to its owner. “Thank you, I’m all better. What’s your name?”

“Barney,” he grinned. “I knew Chester could help you.”

“What are you going to be when you grow up, Barney?” He shrugged his shoulders.

“I know one thing.” He tilted his head. “You are an encourager.”

“Is that a good?” He said, forehead furrowed.

“The best,” she chuckled. He grinned and ran toward the swings.

Humph. Guess I do look at the obstacles in my life as problems instead of opportunities. That little fellow, bless his heart. She listened to the bird song. How beautiful! I’d better get home and apologize to my brother.

Kingdom Thinking. I choose the way of truth. I stumble at the obstacles and problems but the Lord promises He will not put me to shame. He loves me and promises never to leave me. He enlarged my heart--for Him. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come to Him?
