THE STRESS BUSTER!

In Proverbs 17:22, we read: “A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones."

“No way!” Timmy snickered.

“Oh, yeah. Henry worked late that evening. He plodded into the kitchen, plopped into a chair, his elbows on the table. Lucy set a plate before him--steak, baked potato, hot rolls with a green salad on the side.

“'Umm, looks wonderful. Thank you.' She smiled, handed him a cup of coffee, and joined him. He blessed his food, but before he could pick up his fork and knife--

"A streak of yellow fur zipped under his right elbow, snagged his steak, and fled. Stunned for a nano-second, he leaped up, knocking over his chair, and took off after the cat. The feline made it to the now-closed door with the meat dangling from his mouth.

"Henry strode into the kitchen, the abused steak between his thumb and forefinger, and threw it into the garbage. 'My steak. And he thought he could get away from me?'

“His wife erupted with laughter. ‘Didn’t know you could move so fast.'  She wiped away tears then patted her husband on the back. The kids came running to see the cause of the commotion and hooted as did steak-less Henry.

“'Who would have thought a cat could stir up this much laughter? Guess it was in there all the time,’ his wife suppressed a giggle, fingers covering her mouth.”

“Did Uncle Henry get supper?” Grandfather chuckled.

“He did. Not steak, mind you, but a cheese omelet with the trimmings and a good dose of laughter."

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus promises to love me and never forsake me. He'll be there in times of trouble and in times of gladness. He tells me in His Word, a merry heart is like a dose of medicine--a real stress buster. He promises the same to you. Won’t you come to Him?

UNTO US!

In Isaiah 9:6, we read: “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.”

“The service was long.” Timmy trailed Grandfather to the truck. “But the music was good.”

“Count the light bulbs again, did you?” Grandfather chuckled. “Guess I did the same at your age.”

Seatbelts fastened, he pulled into the street, headed east. “We’re not going home?”

“Nope. Taking a detour.” Out of town, he turned down a dirt road filled with potholes and deep ruts.

“The farm?” Timmy leaned forward as the truck came to a stop. “That old barn's about to fall down.”

“Come on.” Behind his seat, Grandfather pulled out a bag. “I brought lunch. Grab that blanket, will you?” He pushed open the barn door, Timmy on his heels. He stopped, sneezed.

“This is a palace compared to the place our Lord was born,” Grandfather said. “Help me spread the blanket.” After eating, He leaned against one of the posts.

December wind whistled through the cracks, stirring bits of hay and dirt. In the sun's rays, dust motes danced in the air.

“Why wasn’t The Lord Jesus born in a palace?” Timmy shivered, pulled his jacket tighter.

“He removed His royal robes in Heaven and came to earth clothed in flesh as a baby, helpless and dependent,” Grandfather said. "He did it to offer everyone His grace and love, whether they’re born in a stable or a castle. He invites whosoever to come.”

“That includes me,” Timmy sniffed.

“I am sorry. It’s easy to forget what He did for me.”

Grandfather hugged him. “Understood. We humans tend to accept His gifts and forget we receive them because He took our place on the cross.” Timmy dipped his head. “But the good news? He loves us and understands us.” Timmy’s head snapped up, his smile outshining his tears.

Kingdom Thinking. The Christmas season brings much to remember—Unto us the Lord Jesus came to earth as a baby to prepare the way to Heaven. He loves me and promises never to leave me. He has a plan for my life. He loves you and offers the same to you. Please come.

HE’S ALIVE!

“Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:4-7. (NKJV).

Susan, the director, checked her watch, nodded to the pianist.

The choir stood on risers, their voices filled with the joy of the season. Parents smiled, proud of their little ones. The narrator did his part, keeping the story on track.

Susan smiled. So far, so good. The four and five-year-olds taking part were well behaved but there was Ricky, a free spirit. Her brows furrowed.

A stirring from the back of the church. Her head swiveled. Did a dog sneak in and was crawling to the front under the pews? Probably belonged to one of the kids in the pageant. Folks shuffled to let it past. Just as Mary and Joseph leaned over the manger, a head popped up from under the first pew, crawled to the manger, peeped in.

“He’s alive,” Ricky jumped up, shouted to the stunned audience. “He really is alive. Look, if you don’t believe me.” He pointed to the baby who began to cry, his little fists swatting the air.

Susan hurried over, picked up her baby, and turned to the audience. “So sorry. Didn’t mean to cause a fuss, but he was asleep so I--”

Applause and a standing ovation from the congregation interrupted her.

"Well done, Susan," Pastor John smiled, his arm around Ricky. He turned to the congregation. "Do I hear an amen?"

Kingdom Thinking.  In my busy life, I fail to remember the Baby in the manger is real. All God and all man. He was born of a virgin, lived in a small village as a carpenter, was crucified, dead and buried. But the story doesn't end there. He rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven. He promises to love you and never leave you. Believe me. He wants you to know He's alive!

CHOOSE WISELY!

“Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary...Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.’”  Luke 1:26, 27, 30, 31.  (NKJV).

“What would you do if the angel Gabriel came to you with an announcement, Cing?" She stilled, eyes wide.

“Don't know. How does an angel look? Like the pictures with wings and stuff?”

“Not at all. Angels are God’s warriors. They’re big and strong and powerful.”

“Then I'd faint.” Grandfather chuckled.

“Good answer. But The Lord God had a plan. And His plans are always for His glory and our good.” Cing tilted her head.

"Mary heard the angel Gabriel call her by name, speak kindly to her. Later, when questioned and, no doubt, criticized, she could remember the voice of Gabriel who represented God. One of God’s gifts to her."

“Her family and friends didn’t believe Mary, did they? Could she tell them about the angel?”

“Probably not. But Joseph and her cousin, Elizabeth, knew and understood.” In the quiet of the moment, Grandfather said, “But know what? The Lord God trusted Mary with this Plan and she accepted it by saying, ‘Let it be to me according to your word.’

"Never would the world be the same after the birth of the Messiah. From this point in history, man would have to choose."

"Like me?"

"Like you. Choose wisely, Cing. Choose wisely."

Kingdom Thinking. Born of a virgin in a stable, raised in an ordinary village, taught the trade of carpenter, the Lord Jesus came to offer salvation to all--no matter the circumstances. He tells us through His Word He loves us and will never leave nor forsake us. His announcement includes you. Won’t you choose Him?

BEST NEWS EVER!

“Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, From the wicked who oppress me, From my deadly enemies who surround me.” Psalms 17:8-9. (NKJV).

“I’m so ugly, Grandfather.” Cing bit her lip, tears filling her eyes.

“Who told you such nonsense?”

She looked at her reflection in the hall mirror. “I can see and everybody thinks so.”

“Did you hurt someone's feelings?” She shook her head. “Talk out of turn?” Another head shake.

“What is this really about?” Grandfather knelt, took her hand.

“Cause--cause I have freckles.” She lifted her face. “Everywhere.” She flung her arms around Grandfather.

“But I love your freckles. Your grandmother has freckles. That’s why I married her. Freckles show that you’re not perfect. Well, almost.” Fingers under her chin, he inspected her face.

“You’re supposed to say that. You’re my grandfather.”

“Hold on a sec.” Grandfather slipped on his overcoat. “Okay. Step this way.” He tucked her inside. “If someone comes in, who do they see?”

“You. I’m hidden.”

“Exactly. But you're alive? Able to think for yourself?”

“'Course.  I’m still me. You’re funny, Grandfather.” She giggled.

"Remember when you asked the Lord Jesus into your heart?" She nodded.

"He tucked you under the shadow of His wings. You're hidden safely in the Lord Jesus. Forever!" A gasp sounded in the overcoat, then out peeked a freckled face.

"Oh, Grandfather. That's the best news ever!" Grandfather grinned.

"Agreed." He gathered her in his arms.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus promises to provide and never forsake me. He loves me with an everlasting love. He sees my problems as opportunities to show He can handle them. He offers the same to you. Look into the mirror, who do you see? He’ll hide you under His wings. Won’t you come to Him?

GIVE THANKS? WHY NOT?

“Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ So when He saw them, He said to them, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.” Luke 17:12-17. (NKJV).

“Mama, why did only one of the men return to thank Jesus? What about the others?”

She read the Bible story to Janie before she tucked her into bed. Innocent eyes stared into hers, desiring an answer. Help me, Lord.

“I wish I knew, sweetie. We take for granted the gifts the Lord Jesus gives us. Food and health and loving care.

“Tell you what,” she said. “Why don’t you and I thank Him more. Not just for the big things but for the little things, too.” She looked at her daughter. “Will you help me remember to give thanks?” A big smile accompanied her nod.

"Thank you, Janie." Janie threw her arms around Mama's neck.

"Thank you, Mama. I love you."

Kingdom Thinking. Thanksgiving reminds us to give thanks. The Scriptures tell us this should be a way of life. The Lord Jesus gave His life to pay for all my sins so I can be with Him forever. That's enough of a reason to give thanks. He loves me and promises never to leave me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you be the one who returns to thank Him?

A THANKSGIVING GIFT!

“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:37-40. (NKJV).

"Look," Grandfather said. Janie finished her waffle, glanced up.

An old model station wagon chugged into the Waffle House parking lot towing a U-Haul trailer. It stopped, steam escaping. A man got out, opened the back door, and out tumbled several children. He reached in, gathered up a little girl with leg braces. She reached up, patted his face. He held the front door for his wife, a baby in her arms. The family came in, chose a booth away from the other diners.

Grandfather leaned close. “Janie, would you like to do something fun?” She nodded.

He signaled the waitress over to their table. “Could you do me a favor? I’d like to pay for the family seated over there.” He motioned with his head.

“I don’t know if that’s allowed,” she said. “I’ll get my supervisor.”

“Is there a problem?” Grandfather explained and she joined in the excitement. "Sure we can do it. I’ll bring the bill when I see their order.”

Grandfather paid and they left, much to Janie's disappointment. “I wanted to see what they did.”

“No, we’re sharing with them. Maybe someday, they will pass it on. We're 'haves' today so we reach out to the 'have-nots.'” She nodded.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus tells us no deed done in His Name goes unnoticed. That’s exciting. He is my supplier, my source of life, love, and joy. I’m privileged to share as He directs. He promises never to leave nor forsake me. He loves me with an everlasting love. A true Thanksgiving gift. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

SHARED LOVE!

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35. (NKJV).

“Come on, Sara,” Johnny tugged his sister's hand. “Let's go to the bakery. My treat.” He planned this trip to the bakery for weeks. Chores completed, he received his wages. He vacillated from cinnamon buns to cookies. Cinnamon buns won out.

“Good morning, Mr. Gray,” Johnny called as they entered the bakery. “I have my money.” He pulled out his handkerchief, the coins tied in the corner, snug and secure.

“Indeed you do,” Mr. Gray answered. “And what's your choice this fine morning?”

“Two cinnamon rolls.” He pointed to the corner of the pan. They have lots of icing.” Mr. Gray nodded, a smile tugging at his lips.

They walked outside and sat on the bench. Johnny opened his mouth to take his first bite when a hand snaked from behind him.

“I’ll take that.” In three bites, Sulky, the town bully, gobbled the whole thing. Johnny's eyes filled.

Sara stood, shoulders stiff. “If you’re hungry, take mine, too.” She offered hers to him.

He stared then ran down the street.

"I'm glad you bought these big cinnamon rolls." Sara divided hers, handed half to Johnny. "Always taste better when you share with someone."

"Even Sulky?" Sara smiled.

"Absolutely! Just think, Johnny. You may be the only one who shared with him today."

Kingdom Thinking. When bullies come, and they come in different shapes and sizes, I choose to remember this doesn't surprise our Lord Jesus. He shows me how He works in all things. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to forsake me. He wants to show you this love. Won’t you come to Him?

TODAY’S PRESENT!

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,' says my soul. 'Therefore I hope in Him!’" Lamentations 3:22-24. (NKJV).

“You refused a gift from Mrs. Smith? Why?” Grandfather's eyebrows raised.

“She doesn’t have much money.” Timmy tipped his head. “Did I do wrong?”

“Have a seat son.” Grandfather chewed on his bottom lip. “Remember how you felt when you made your first cake?” Timmy giggled.

“Thought you’d done a great job until you jerked the pan out of the oven and added the sugar.” Grandfather’s laugh started deep, rumbled and bubbled up.

“Forgot to add it to the batter. It didn’t turn out too good, did it? Soggy in the middle.” Timmy snickered.

Grandfather laughed, his face red. “Sad describes it better.”

Timmy snorted. “You ate a piece anyway.”

“Yep. Considered it a potion from my favorite grandson.”

“I’m your only grandson, Grandfather.”

“True and our Lord is faithful. He takes the mess of our lives and uses it to His glory. Just like the cake you baked or--half-baked.” Grandfather chuckled. “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning. A new day is a present. Waiting to be opened."

“Grandfather, I’ll be back.” He grabbed his baseball cap as he went to the door. “May I borrow your rake?”

“Sure but where're you going?”

“To deliver a present. Mrs. Smith’s yard’s covered with leaves.” Grandfather smiled.

Kingdom Thinking. I’m here because of the Lord’s mercies. He promises never to leave nor forsake me. He loves me with an everlasting love. His compassions are new every morning--a present from Him. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

FOG!

“O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.” Jeremiah 10:23. (NKJV).

“Grandfather. I can’t see where we’re going.” Fog rolled in, blurring their surroundings.

“Don’t panic, Timmy. Can you see a few steps in front of you?”

“Yes. But not far.”

“Trust me. I know this path. Watch me, not the things around you.”

“Are you sure?”

Grandfather knelt in front of Timmy, put his hands on his shoulders. “Look at me. Have I ever caused you harm? I love you, son. I know where we’re going.” He chuckled. “Hang on to my coattails.”

“Those aren’t coattails. It’s your jacket tied around your waist.” Timmy giggled.

“Works for me.” Grandfather winked at him.

“Works for me, too, Grandfather.”  He latched on to Grandfather’s jacket, head up, steps steady.

“Maybe this is a lesson for both of us." Timmy tilted his head.

“Don’t understand.”

“When you thought we were lost in this fog, fear rolled in. Fear causes confusion. Wrong thinking. We need--.”

“A coattail to hang on to?” He tugged on Grandfather’s jacket.

“Right.” Grandfather chuckled. “But not any coat tail. We need to hang on to the Lord Jesus--the One who directs our steps. He promises never to leave nor forsake us. He loves us--forever!”

Kingdom Thinking. Many times I’ve struggled along the foggy path of life. I must remember I’m not alone. I’m with the one who created the path. He knows the way but most importantly? He knows and loves me just as I am. He offers this love to you. Won't you come to Him?

SECOND CHANCES!

In Genesis 37:10, we read: “So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down before you?” And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

“How would you like to bow down to Sam, Timmy?”

“That’s not fair. Sam thinks he’s smarter than I am. He always has money and...” Grandfather tilted his head.

“You’re saying you wouldn’t like it?”

“I’d hate it.”

“Well, Timmy. You described Joseph’s brothers. His fancy-colored coat flapped in their faces showing his importance to Jacob, his father. Jealous, they made fun of him. But when he told them his dreams of how they’d bow down to him? That did it.”

“So they sold him into slavery?”

“They did. For twenty shekels of silver. Under the going price.”

“You think they felt bad about selling their brother?” Grandfather shrugged.

“They lied about it. They killed a kid of a goat, dipped Joseph's fancy coat in its blood, and brought it to their father.

“‘Look what we found.’ Of course, their father recognized it, thought a wild animal had killed Joseph.”

“They never told his father what they’d done?”

“Not until years later—when they had no other choice. I believe their fear kept them silent—hostage, really.”

“Would they get a second chance?”

“Our Gracious God is a God of second chances.” Grandfather smiled. “A Great and Good God always gives second chances.”

“What about the dreams?”

“All in God’s timing, Timmy. What appears delayed to us, is God’s perfect timing.”

“Guess Sam’s okay.” He shrugged. “He does make better grades.”

"I agree. Second chances are always a good thing." Grandfather hugged him.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus is always on time, never in a rush, and gives me second chances and third and more. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave me. He offers you second chances, too. Come to Him. He loves you.

THE PRINCE DID WHAT?

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”  2 Corinthians 5:21. (NKJV).

“No way, Grandfather. Someone took the punishment for the crown prince?” Grandfather nodded.

“Doesn't seem right, does it?” He quirked his eyebrow.

“Actually, the Whipping Boy was an established position in the English court during the Tudor and Stuart monarchies of the 15th and 16th centuries. Usually, he was a companion to the prince, high born and educated with him.”

“Then why would the prince want his friend punished?” Timmy frowned.

“Ahh. Glad you asked. The tutor wasn't allowed to discipline the prince so the whipping boy took his place. Hopefully, the prince would see the pain he caused his friend and be sorry for his deeds.” Grandfather tilted his head. “How would you like to live back then?”

“I wouldn't. Timmy turned serious. “It doesn’t seem fair.”

“It doesn’t. But, Timmy, what if the crown prince took the punishment for the whipping boy? That would really be something, huh?”

“Would be an attention grabber for sure,” he said. “But no prince would ever do that.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, son. The Prince took the whipping and the curses and every sin known to mankind upon Himself. He volunteered so we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

“The Lord Jesus,” Timmy whispered.“He did that for me?”

“Yes, son, so you, I, and whosoever can be set free from sin and become right with God.”

Kingdom Thinking. No way can I understand God’s love so I praise Him. He promises never to leave nor forsake me and loves me with an everlasting love. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

THE PRICELESS PEARL!

In Matthew 13:45-46, we read: “Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

“Listen to this story, Timmy.” He plopped on the couch by Grandfather.

"Jacob searched for the perfect pearl for years. Now in this out-of-the-way shop, he spotted it. Had to have it. Didn’t want the merchant to realize how much so he looked at other items.

The merchant approached him. “It’s for sale.”

“Excuse me?” The merchant grinned.

"The Pearl of Great Price. It’s for sale.”

“How much?” The pearl took his breath away.

“How much are you willing to pay?”

He glanced at the pearl. “Everything.” He reached for his checkbook. The merchant took out paper and pencil.

“What do you own?”

“My home.” The merchant wrote, one home.

“Anything else?"

“Two cars.” Noted.

"A wife? Children?" The man nodded, held up his thumb and three fingers.

“One wife. Three Children,” the merchant listed. “Bank accounts? Saving accounts?” All assets, even the family pets were added to the list.

“Here’s the deal. The pearl is yours but everything you own is mine. However, you are now responsible for my property.” He looked at him. “Understand?” At his nod, he continued. “Handle my possessions with great care.”

“Don’t understand, Grandfather.” He looked past Timmy, thinking.

“I had so much, yet something was missing in my life--an empty place. Then someone introduced me to the Lord Jesus, the priceless Pearl. I sold out to Him, my perspective of life changing. He entrusts me with riches untold. Family, friends, abilities--all to show His Graciousness towards me and others. Everything I have is His.”

Kingdom Thinking. As we journey through life, we reach out to others in the Name of Jesus. This message of love and forgiveness of sin will be foolishness for many, but to those who believe, it is the life-changing power of God. Have you found the Priceless Pearl? The Lord Jesus is waiting.

TRUST-FILLED LOVE!

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.’” Matthew 18:1-4. (NKJV).

“A little child? Doesn't make sense. You always tell me to grow up and act my age.” Grandfather chuckled.

“When I say grow up, son, I’m saying don’t be childish. There’s a difference between childlike and childish.”

“Childish like when I got mad with Sam yesterday and stomped home?” Grandfather nodded.

"Slammed the door so hard the windows rattled.

“Remember when the Hill's adopted their little boy? Mrs. Hill hadn't seen him. Questions flooded her. How if he didn’t like her? She said the doubts fled when his little arms went around her neck.”

“He loves his mom and dad.”

“You’re right. Why?”

“He knows they love him so he trusts them?” Grandfather smiled.

“The Lord Jesus offers us love and security in His love. Once we realize how much He loves us, we trust Him.”

“It’s hard to trust Him when I can't see him.” Timmy tilted his head, paused. “Oh, like when the Hill’s got their son? They’d never seen him but they loved him?”

“Exactly. They asked nothing of him. Just kept on loving him.”

Kingdom Thinking. I’m grateful the Lord Jesus gives pictures of His great love. I was terrified our son wouldn’t love me. But at the airport, seeing me for the first time, he stretched out his little arms to me. When troubles come, I choose to remember the Lord loves me the same way. He promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you trust Him?

DARK PLACES!

“I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the Lord, who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel.” Isaiah 45:3. (NKJV).

“What about this one?” Grandfather peeped over the rim of his glasses, shook his head.

“Too big. Sometimes the best quality can be small.” Timmy dropped the large rock on the ground.

This week they’d camp in Pisgah National Forest. Today they'd mine for precious stones. Tomorrow they’d hike up Looking Glass's rock face.

“Look at this purple rock.” Timmy washed some of the sand and gravel from it. “I like it.”

“An amethyst. Nice find." Grandfather grinned. "Didn’t jump into your hands?”

"I had to dig deep for this one.”

“You know, Timmy. The Lord promises us treasures--hidden in secret places.”

“What does that mean exactly?”

“Under heat and pressure, over time, gems are created. We have to dig for them.” He looked at Timmy. “The Lord loves us more than gems, right? He puts us in dark places...”

“Like when bad things happen?”

“It’s hard to trust in the dark place,” Grandfather said. "But the Lord knows what He’s doing. He’s in the process of making treasures.”

“But it’s scary.”

“Yes, but He teaches me He, the Lord, calls me by my name. And the hidden riches will come to light.”

“We’ll get hidden riches?” Timmy’s eyes sparkled.

“We’re His jewels.” Grandfather chuckled. “We must be cut and polished so the light can shine through.”

“Wow. That’s amazing.” Grandfather grinned.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord brought me from a dark place. Through his love and grace, He’s in the process of making me into one of His sparkling jewels. He loves me and promises never to leave me. Would you like to be one of His jewels? Come to Him.

INVISIBLE!

“If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years; and in the seventh year he shall go out free and pay nothing...But if the servant plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.” Exodus 21:2-6.  (NKJV).

“Grandfather, your ear hurting?”

“No. Just checking my right earlobe. Has a hole in it.” Timmy frowned.

“I don’t see a hole.” He leaned closer.

"It's invisible." Grandfather chuckled.

“Know about the bondservant, son?

“Just a story. Why would anyone want to be a servant?” Grandfather leaned back in his chair.

“Depends on your master--one who'll love you and provide for you. The Lord Jesus did that for me, for you.”

“How?”

“I tried to be honorable. To love my neighbor. The more I tried, the more I failed. I was one miserable somebody.” Timmy smiled.

“But you’re good, Grandfather. Why’d you think you were bad?”

“Why do you say I’m good?”

“You treat folks nice and you're kind--”

“Because Jesus loves me. He paid for my sins, set me free. Like the servant, I love my Master, told Him I wanted to be His. ‘You’re sure?' He said. Then He brought me to the door because He is the Door. He pierced my ear with an awl, a permanent hole so I serve Him forever. Now I come and go where He sends me.”

“Why the ear?”

“Listening obedience--I hear and obey His voice.”

“I asked the Lord into my life.” Timmy touched his ear. "Do I have a hole?” Grandfather smiled, nodded..

"Believe me. It's invisible!

Kingdom Thinking. When I understood the Lord Jesus loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me, I sold out to Him. His forever. He offers the same to you. Won’t you choose Him?

THE PROMISE!

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:13,14. (NKJV).

“Did you really do that, Grandad?” He grinned, leaned against the kitchen counter.

“Humph! That's his version. Want to hear how I met your Granddad, Janie?" Grandmother glanced at him. He winked.

“The summer after graduation, we worked at an orthopedic camp for underprivileged children. At first, I didn’t believe he'd graduated from the University of South Carolina with a major in Biology the same as I and grew up ten miles from me. Never saw him before."

"You’d never seen him?” He wiggled his eyebrows at Janie, making her giggle.

“No,” Grandmother smiled. “But soon we were good friends.” She tilted her head. “He’d be leaving to study at the Medical University of South Carolina, and I’d be left behind.

“Separated by a hundred miles, he’d study medicine for four years while I remained to teach eighth-grade science.

“He came to say goodbye. ‘Take a ride with me?’ He parked at the jewelry store, held my hand as we entered.

“'Will you marry me?' He stood at the counter displaying rings. 'I don’t know the date yet. But I want to spend my life with you.' He slipped a beautiful ring on my finger.

"At times I'd doubt, then remember. ‘No, it isn’t a dream. He’s coming back.’ I wore the guarantee on my left hand.” She wiggled her ring finger. The diamond glittered.

“That’s so romantic,” Janie sighed. Granddad winked at Grandmother, took her hand.

"Know what?" Janie looked at Granddad. "The Lord Jesus offers us new life with Him. He loves us and sealed us with the Spirit of Promise, the guarantee of our inheritance. The Greek word for guarantee can indicate a ring."

"Like you gave Grandmother? A promise you'd come back to marry her?"

"Absolutely. We can be sure the Lord Jesus, our Bridegroom, will keep His promise to us, the bride." He hugged Grandmother. "He'll come back."

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord promises never to leave nor forsake me and loves me with an everlasting love. He sealed me with the Holy Spirit of promise. When doubts come, I remember His promises and praise Him. The Lord offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

WHAT DID YOU SAY?

"Then He said to His disciples, 'The Harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.'" Matthew 9:37,38, (NKJV)

Won't be long before I’ll harvest this patch of watermelons. Maybe add another blue ribbon to my collection. The framed ribbons adorned the wall by the bookcase in his study.

He stared at the yellowed stem,  turned the melon over, then another.

“What’s going on?” his face flushed.

“Timmy!” He came running, braked when he saw Grandfather's face.

“Grandfather?” his voice squeaked.

“Know anything about this?” He pointed to the melon. A neat triangular plug dangled from the melon. Fisted hands on his hips, eyebrows furrowed, he tapped his foot.

“Well.” Timmy dug his toe in the dirt.

"Sam and I checked the watermelons for you--to see if they were ready to pick. The first one wasn’t so we put the plug back...”

“And you checked all of them?” Timmy bit his lip.

“We wanted to help you.” His eyes glistened. Grandfather massaged his forehead with his fingers. “And you read from the Bible workers were needed for the harvest...”

Taking a deep breath, he whooshed it through his lips. “Come here, son.

“When the Bible tells us to pray the Lord will send out laborers, He’s telling us to share His message of love with others. Many people don’t realize God loves them.”

“Oh. Didn’t have anything to do with the watermelon patch, huh?” Grandfather smiled.

“No, but we can both learn from this. Sometimes when we say something, only part is heard. So it’s not what we say but what people hear us say.”

“I’m sorry, Grandfather.”

“Me, too. Maybe next year you can help me plant and tend the watermelons. Would you like that?”

“Yessir.” Grandfather put his arm around his grandson as they walked back to the house. “How about a glass of lemonade?”

Kingdom Thinking. Too many times I hear part of what's said which causes problems. Hear what the Lord Jesus says. He promises to love me with an everlasting love and never to leave nor forsake me. He promises the same to you. Do you hear Him?

TANGLED!

In Galatians 5:1, we read: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

“Ouch. That hurts.” Cing twisted her head.

“Sit still. I don’t know how one little girl can have so many tangles in her hair.”

Aunt Janie gently pulled the brush through her hair, beginning at the ends and working her way up.

“Better?”

Nodding, she sniffed. "Aunt Janie, why does my hair get so tangled?"

“It's a part of life. Shows you are alive even when you’re asleep.” Cing giggled.

“How do the tangles get there? All I did was sleep.”

“You dream and twist and turn--”

“Does my hair dream and twist, too?” Blue eyes searched her aunt's face in the mirror.

“Your naturally curly hair does what it wants--just like a little girl I love. But it looks pretty now.” She put the brush down.

“In life, our human nature gets us in trouble. We don’t tell the truth or do what we should--our life tangles. The more we try to untangle it, the messier it gets.”

“You untangled my hair. Thank you.” Aunt Janie smiled.

“You’re welcome. But you let me do it...”

“And it didn’t hurt too much.” Cing poked out her bottom lip. Aunt Janie laughed.

“Ah, tangles hurt. The secret is to allow someone who loves you to untangle them.”

“Like you.” She turned, hugged her aunt.

Kingdom Thinking. My life, filled with tangles, became worst as I tried to untangle them. Then the Lord Jesus came. He untangled me--set me free. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

PLUMBLINES AND SANDCASTLES!

“Thus He showed me: Behold, the Lord stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand. And the Lord said to me, ‘Amos, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘A plumb line.’ Then the Lord said: ‘Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore.’” Amos 7:7-9. (NKJV).

“Can I help, Grandad?”

“Sure, Timmy.” Grandfather held up his hand. “You must follow directions.”

“Why?"

“See this set of plans for the new garden shed.” Spread on the table, he explained about the foundation, walls, etc.

“If we follow them, it’ll be sturdy, solid.  And we’re using a plumb line.”

“A plumb line? I love plums especially Grandmother's plum preserves. They’re great!”

“Agreed but this is a different kind of plumb."

He held up the plumb line, the weight dangled at the bottom. “If it lines up from top to bottom, the wall is straight.” Arm around Timmy’s shoulders, he lowered his voice.

“Remember the sandcastle we built at the beach last summer?” he chuckled. "We dug a moat, packed the sand in the center to make our castle walls, and--”

“One big wave took it down.” Timmy grinned.

“Not what we want for the shed. We'll store our lawnmower and other garden tools in it.” Timmy nodded, examined the plumb line. “You know, son, God has a plumb line.” Timmy's head snapped up.

"The Bible teaches us the laws God put into place to show us when we don’t match up. He sent the prophets to tell us about His love. And you know what?” Timmy shook his head.

“We still make crooked walls of our lives.” His shoulders slumped.

"Because He loves us, the Lord Jesus came and gave His life as a sacrifice so we could live. The cross is God’s plumb line and He's the only One who can live a 'plumbed life'”

"For me, too?"

"Absolutely. When you ask Him into your life, He comes and never leaves." Timmy smiled.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord gave the law and the prophets but I messed up. So the Lord Jesus came to live His plumbed life through me. He loves me and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

THE RULE KEEPER!

“So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. Then all the people answered together and said, ‘All that the Lord has spoken we will do.’”  Exodus 19:7,8. (NKJV).

“Grandfather, kind of crazy for that sign to be there on the edge of the precipice, huh?” Grandfather grinned.

“You’d think but folks do what they want."

Grandfather tilted his head. “When Moses presented the way the Lord God wanted the people to follow, they answered, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.”

“Did they?”

“They broke one rule after the other. We haven’t learned much either.”

“Please explain.”

“The Lord promised if the people would obey Him, He’d take care of them. They would have everything they needed and more.”

“Sounds like a good deal.”

“Easy to agree ahead of time but following through? Didn't have the power within them. They looked at the other nations, wanted the ‘freedom’ of their neighbors.” Grandfather shook his head.

“Got into trouble just like we do today.” Timmy’s eyebrow raised. "Our human nature breaks the rules.

“Remember when Jimmy visited us? He liked your pocketknife. You let him use it but that wasn’t good enough.”

“We searched for it. Didn’t know he’d packed it until his mom mailed it back.”

“There is only One who can follow all the rules.” Timmy’s shoulders slumped.

“Then there’s no hope.”

“Ahh. But there is. God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ to fulfill all the requirements. He took my place. When I realized I was a hopeless sinner, turned to Him, He accepted me and made me a part of His family.”

“Will He accept me, too?” Grandfather hugged his grandson, eyes glistening.

Kingdom Thinking. The more I tried to follow the rules, the more I broke them. Then Jesus came. He said if I trusted in Him, He’d live in me and keep the rules. He loves me and promises never to leave me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

THE SMARTING HEART!

In 1 John 3:20, we read: “For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.”

"Glad you made it home." Grandfather checked his watch.

"I helped Mrs. Elliot take her groceries into her house."

"Good."

"Not so good. She handed me a grocery bag. It slipped from my hands."

"Oh, no."

"Stuff went everywhere." Timmy's shoulders slumped.

“Anything break?”

“No sir. Some cans rolled under the car. I crawled under and got them."

Grandfather sighed. "Sounds like you had quite a time."

"Well," Timmy chewed his bottom lip. "I stood up, snagged my jeans pocket on the door handle. Ripped it. Mrs. Elliott's hands fisted on her hips.

"'Sure you can unload my groceries?'"

“And then, Sam and Johnny rode by on their bikes. They hooted and laughed--made me mad.”

"So what'd you do?" Grandfather's lips twitched.

"I finished the job." His chin quivered. "Why do I always mess up?"

“You helped Mrs. Elliott. Bet she smiled. Probably chuckled all day." Timmy grinned.

"Yep. And she gave me lemonade and cookies. But...?"

"Son. You disappointed yourself--your heart’s condemning you, not the Lord.

“You asked Jesus to come in, to save you at camp, right?” He nodded.

“Your goodness can't save you. The Lord Jesus did. So your badness can’t lose you.” Timmy’s forehead creased. "The Lord Jesus knew all about you when He bought you, made you His own.”

Timmy's face brightened. “Thank you, Grandfather.”

Kingdom Thinking. God is greater than my heart. When He forgives me, it’s a done deal. He knows all about me. He promises never to leave nor forsake me and loves me with an everlasting love. Do you realize God is greater than your heart? He loves you. Won't you come to Him?

AWESOME VIEWPOINT!

“Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men. He rules by His power forever; His eyes observe the nations; Do not let the rebellious exalt themselves.” Psalms 66:5, 7.  (NKJV).

“Watch out for that deep drop-off, son.” Grandfather put down his walking stick. “Let’s take a break, check out the scenery.”

Leaning against the rock wall, Grandfather pointed up. “See the eagle? Watch him glide on the thermals. His tremendous eyesight magnifies. Like your binoculars.”

Timmy adjusted them to see the bird. “He’s beautiful and flying free. Looks like I can reach out and touch him.”

“Turn the glasses around. Look through the big end."

“Everything is tiny.” He looked at the rocks at his feet.

“Changes your point of view, doesn’t it? Same binoculars, same view. Changed because of the way you look through the lenses.”

Grandfather tilted his head. “Just think, Timmy. The Lord showed us an amazing principle. He’s all seeing, all knowing. He sees the big picture, but sees the tiny details, too.”

“Awesome. Like my life?”

Grandfather smiled. “Good way to put it. The Lord is awesome in all that He does.” Arm around Timmy’s shoulders, he said. “He cares about every detail of our life and lets us enjoy His mighty works.

“When viewing life, if we look through God's eyepiece, everything’s magnified and we see the large picture. He’s in control. But if we look through the world's lens, we fret, become narrow, even bitter.”

“Another choice, huh?”

“Indeed. Many times during the day.”

Kingdom Thinking. I chose to look through the correct eyepiece on life’s binoculars. Otherwise, my life focus is blurred. The Lord promises never to leave nor forsake me and He loves me with an everlasting love. Let Him hold life’s binoculars so you can see His Works. His viewpoint is awesome.

SEALED BY LOVE!

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14. (NKJV).

“I hear the words ‘were sealed,’ but don’t understand them.” Timmy dipped his head.

“Remember when we bought your puppy?” His eyes sparkled.

“Sure do. I held Harley but couldn’t bring him home. He still needed his mother.”

“Right. But we paid for him, trusted Mr. Jones to take care of him. He promised to call us when Harley could come home.” Grandfather quirked his left eyebrow.

“How did you know which puppy was Harley? There were others.”

“Because I chose him. See the way his hair stands up on top of his head? None of the others were like him.” Grandfather chuckled.

“So you’re telling me Harley's special? You can pick him out of a litter of Boykin Spaniels?”

Timmy nodded as he hugged his pup. “He's mine ‘cause I love him and he loves me.”

“Even when he chewed your baseball bat? And your new shoes? And when you have to feed him and train him?” Timmy held Harley close.

“Indeed he does love you and you love him. And that’s the way the Lord Jesus loves you. You fit in His arms.”

“The way Harley fits in mine, Grandfather?”

Grandfather hugged Timmy--and Harley. “When we put our trust in the Lord Jesus and believe in Him, we’re sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. He’s the guarantee of our inheritance to come. We’re sealed by His love. We belong to Him.

“You hear that, Harley? We’re sealed by love.” Harley licked Timmy’s face.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus paid for my inheritance and sealed me with His Holy Spirit. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to forsake me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you accept Him?

THE POWER GIVER!

“O God, You are more awesome than Your holy places. The God of Israel is He who gives strength and power to His people." Psalm 68:35. (NKJV).

“That’s what I call a car.” Grandfather turned. A new red sports car rolled to a stop at the neighboring gas pump.

The amazing low-slung car, built to hug the curves, exuded power. Spectators gathered, oohing and aahing, maybe even drooling.

“Come on, Grandfather. I want to see inside.” Grandfather replaced the nozzle and they ambled over.  “I want a car like that when I grow up.”

“No doubt about it, huh?” Grandfather chuckled.

“Let’s look under the hood,” one gentleman suggested.

“In a minute,” the owner said. "First look at the safety precautions. Check out these special tires, the reinforced roll bar...”

“How many horses?” someone asked but was ignored.

"Let’s see under the hood.” The owner shrugged, popped the hood.

They gasped. A clean engine gleamed but no battery? No power source for the car with all the safety features?

“How’d you get the car here? I saw you drive up.”

The owner winked at Timmy. “Rolled down the hill and glided in as pretty as you please.” He pointed to a van parked across the street. “Cameras rolling as we speak. If you agree, you can be on the evening news.” All clamored to give their consent. Who wanted to miss their five minutes of fame?

“Changed my mind,” Timmy said. “I want a car with power.” Grandfather smiled.

Kingdom Thinking.  I was like that car. To the world, all appeared well but the power of life was missing. Then the Lord Jesus came. He took the emptiness and pain--all my unrighteousness--and nailed it to the cross. He declared me righteous. He promises to love me and never forsake me. He is my Power Giver. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

THE WARRIOR

“A Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, ‘Are You for us or for our adversaries?’ So He said, ‘No, but as  Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’ And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, ‘What does my Lord say to His servant?’” Joshua 5:13b-15. (NKJV).

“What would you do if the Commander of the army of the Lord came to you?” Grandfather closed the Book.

“Don’t know. Probably faint.”

“And rightly so. He carried a sword.”

“I don’t get it. He didn’t say who He was for.”

“Who did He approach?”

“Joshua.”

“What was His answer?”

“He didn’t answer the question, but told Joshua He was the Commander of the army of God.” Timmy tilted his head. “That’s important, isn’t it?” Grandfather smiled.

“He got Joshua’s attention when He came to him. He wanted Joshua to know to whom he belonged. We’ll always have adversaries but the Commander of the Lord’s army, the Lord Jesus, has authority over them.

“So, what was Joshua’s response?”

“He fell down and worshiped.”

“You're right, Timmy, but also he made a declaration. He knew he served the Commander. In other words, Your word is my command.”

“Does that happen today?” He stared at grandfather. “Does He want me to serve?”

“Indeed He does. He asks us to follow Him.”

“I’ll do it, Grandfather.”

Kingdom Thinking. I thought the world different from Joshua’s time, but is it? Adversaries abound, but our Commander, the Lord Jesus, is in control. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come?

READY! SET! GO!

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.” 1 Corinthians 9:24. (NKJV).

“I’m ready, Grandfather. I’m going to win this race.” Grandfather gave a thumbs up.

“I’ll be right here in the stands. And son?” Timmy turned. “I’ll be praying for you.”

The big race day, July 4th created excitement and always drew a  crowd. The runners toed the line, on their marks. At the sound of the shot, they took off.

Timmy kept abreast of the group. He headed into the home stretch. A racer pushed past him. He stumbled, his foot twisting.

“Aww. I’ll never make it now.” He grabbed his ankle. He struggled to stand, felt strong arms come around him.

“Lean on me, son. We’ll get to the finish line.”

“Grandfather.” Timmy blinked his eyes to keep the tears at bay. “I lost the race.”

“Nope. You lose when you quit.  Let’s get to the finish line.”

The crowd cheered the runners across the finish line, especially Timmy and Grandfather.

“Thank you, Grandfather.” Timmy’s chin quivered, his eyes shone with love.

“We’re a family, son. Always there for one another.” He tilted his head. “Sort of like the race of life. No matter which section of the race we’re in, the Lord Jesus watches over us. And when we fall? He’s there to pick us up. Sometimes He uses other members of the family.”

“Like you, Grandfather?”

“Exactly. The Lord loves you,  Timmy. He’s always there for you. That’s one prayer of mine I hope you’ll never forget.” He hugged his grandson.

Kingdom Thinking. When I realized I was in the race of life, I froze, terrified. How could I do this? Then the Lord Jesus came to my rescue. He promises never to leave nor forsake me and He loves me with an everlasting love. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come to Him?

A TRUSTWORTHY PILOT!

“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.’” John 8:31-32. (NKJV).

“We'll leave in the evening--have another day in the Bahamas."

A good plan, we made our travel arrangements. Trained in the US Air Force as a fighter pilot, my husband flew a Cessna 172.

On the appointed date, we took off. Another couple accompanied us, the guys seated up front, ladies in the back. Before long, the hum of the engines lulled me to sleep.

My husband’s voice, requesting to land and refuel, awakened me. Next leg--over the Atlantic.

His voice changed tones. I sat up.

"Please check the coordinates." The lighted runway was not the one requested. Different runway lights flashed on, the former winked out. We landed safely, refueled, and were soon on our way.

I'm on a life journey. I need a pilot I can trust. One who is faithful and true. One who cares when I’m landing in the wrong place. When I looked out of the window of the plane, the landing lights looked right to me. But not to the eye of the experienced pilot with an instrument rating.

Our Lord Jesus promises if I abide in His Word, I will be His disciple. I will know the truth because He who is truth abides in me. He will pilot me. He will bring me home safely.

Kingdom Thinking. Perhaps like me, you have been deceived and believed the wrong coordinates for your life journey. The Good News? The Lord Jesus will pilot you. He loves you with an everlasting love and will never leave nor forsake you. Won’t you come to Him? He is a pilot you can trust.

A NEVER ENDING SPRING!

“And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.” Romans 11:6 (NKJV).

“You’re talking in circles, Grandfather.” Timmy plopped in the kitchen chair, chin resting in his hand.

“Are you standing or sitting?” Timmy rolled his eyes.

“I’m sitting.”

“Right. But if you stand up, you’re no longer sitting. One or the other, right?”

“Guess so.” Timmy's forehead wrinkled. “Never thought about it like that.”

“Son, we make things awfully hard to understand. All I’m pointing out is you can’t have both. If we saved by grace, we’re saved by grace...”

“I can’t work for it?” Grandfather shook his head. “I can’t steal it? I can’t buy and I can't sell it?” He picked up the cadence as Timmy tapped his fingers on the table.

“We certainly don’t deserve it.” His face shone with delight and wonder. "It’s a never-ending spring--a gift. Paid for by the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Timmy watched the glowing face of his grandfather, whispered. “If it's a gift, why don’t we let it shine through us all the time?”

“Because when I become stubborn or unforgiving, I shove grace to the side, slow down His flowing spring. I think I can work it out for myself--”

“It’s not allowing His grace to work.” He frowned. “Where is it then?” Grandfather chuckled.

“Good point. I haven’t lost it but clogged up His spring. I confess it to Him, He cleans the spring so I can use the gift in my life. Life is much easier for me when I do.”

Kingdom Thinking. I confess I need His grace--every minute of the day. I don't deserve it. It's a gift. He loves me with an everlasting love and promises never to leave nor forsake me. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come to Him?
