MAIL ORDER BRIDE

In Genesis 24:37, we read: “My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell; but you shall go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.”

“You are my oldest servant,” Abraham looked at his servant. “I trust you to go to the far country.”

“Perhaps the woman will not believe me or trust me. Her family may object.”

“In that case, you will be released from this oath.”

So the servant took camels and his master’s goods and went to the city of Nahor in Mesopotamia. When he arrived, he prayed to the God of his master for success and asked for kindness to his master Abraham.

“Let the young woman that I say, ‘Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink’--let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac.” Before he could finish speaking, Rebekah came with her pitcher.

She responded to his request, giving water to him and his camels. He, wondering at her, stayed quiet. Then he gave her gifts of gold and asked if she knew of lodging in her father’s house. She went home, brought her brother to meet the servant and was offered hospitality. The servant explained his mission and the brother said: “Ask her if she’s willing.”

“I will go.” Then Rebecca and her maids rode on their camels and followed the man.

How could Rebecca promise to marry one that she had never seen? She believed the servant that her future husband was kind and good and would take care of her. I can imagine during the long trek when doubt came, she would look at a sparkling jewel and choose to believe in her new husband. Rebekah, a forerunner of the mail order bride, is a picture of the Lord Jesus and His Bride. He sends His messengers to the far country. They give us His Promises. Then we choose to believe in Him.

Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus loves me with an everlasting love. He promises never to leave nor forsake me. He sent His messengers to my country to give me jewels of promise. He offers the same to you. Won’t you come to Him?
