In Matthew 2:1-2, we read: “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.’”
“How did the wise men know to come to Bethlehem?”
“They followed the star, Timmy. Astrologers, who studied the stars, saw this unusual star, believed it was a sign from God. They called it ‘His star’ which had guided them to Israel. This scared Herod. He didn’t want anyone to take his kingdom.”
“Grandfather, why didn’t they go to Bethlehem instead of Jerusalem? Then Herod wouldn’t know about the King of the Jews.”
“The Lord God has His plan. He loves us sinners, even Herod. ’The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.’” 1 Peter 3:9.
“He loves me that much? Even when He sees everything I do and say?” Grandfather nodded. “And He loves the wise men?” Another nod from Grandfather. “How can He love so much?”
Grandfather smiled. “Now that’s a wise question. But if we look back at history, we see He let Daniel be taken into captivity...”
“Daniel that was put in the den of lions?”
“The same. Remember he was a wise man in the courts of Babylon.”
“You think he started a wiseman school?” Grandfather chuckled.
“What I want you to see, Timmy, is that our Lord is in charge and He allows us to tell others about the Lord Jesus. We go and tell just as the wise men did.”
Kingdom Thinking. When we think of the wisemen, we often think of smart, wealthy men who came seeking the newborn King. But this is history--His Story. A story that brings hope and healing to anyone who believes. A shepherd or a wealthy person. All are wise who seek Him. How about you? Do you seek Him?
