In Hebrews 10:1, we read: “For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.”
Five year-old Jake folded his arms across his chest. “I want to see Jesus. Then I’ll believe He’s real.”
His grandfather thought for a minute. “Let me show you something, Jake. Now watch carefully. You stay here on the couch. Okay?”
Jake nodded, but his arms remained tight across his chest and his chin tilted up a bit. His mind was made up. He watched Grandfather walk out of the room and into the hall adjacent to the den. The lights in the hall dimmed. That’s when Jake saw it. A looming shadow.
“Grandfather,” he called. “Come quick. A big shadow is coming to get me.”
“I’m here, Jake,” Grandfather said as he walked into the room.
Jake leaped from the couch and into his grandfather’s arms. He tilted his head, looking up into the face of his grandfather, who loved him. “You were the shadow?”
Grandfather nodded. The light shone behind me. What you saw was the shadow of me. You couldn’t really tell how I looked, could you?” Jake shook his head. ”Now I’m in the light...out of the shadows.”
The Scripture tells us that the law is a shadow of the good things to come, but not the very image of the things. A shadow can distort the truth and leave much to the imagination. So many times, we just fill in the blank, so to speak. Like Jake, even though he knew his grandfather, he didn’t recognize him in the shadow.
Kingdom Thinking. The Lord Jesus gave us the law. But much more than the law, He fulfilled the law and now gives us the chance to come to know Him. He loves us with an everlasting love. He has promised never to leave nor forsake us. Won’t you come out of the shadows and into His light? He waits for you.
