In Psalm 23:5-6, we read: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
The guest sat at the table waiting...waiting to see the outcome of the visit. He knew he didn’t deserve the friendship of his Host. “I should not have come,” he thought. “But desperate times require desperate measures.” He recounted the many times he had been unkind...he had left him on the road after finding him robbed and beaten. In fact, he counted this man as unclean and had maneuvered to the far side of the road. He failed to help him when he was crippled and begging as he went to the temple to worship. He...”What’s the use, he thought. I’ll never be accepted. I don’t deserve him as a friend. If only I could undo the past.”
Dinner over, the guest watched as his host reached for his now empty cup and began to fill it, slowly but surely. A half-full cup would be dismissal--no words need be spoken.
One quarter full, one half full, three-fourths full, then overflowing. He looked up into the face of his host. He saw the look of acceptance but more than that. He saw a smile that started in his eyes and transformed the face of the Host. The smile became light that filled the guest. No, no longer a guest. A member of the family.
When the Lord Jesus came, He prepared the table before me in the presence of my enemies. He anointed my head with oil; My cup runs over. (I love this last part.) Surely (not maybe) goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Wow. Amazing.
Kingdom Thinking. This offer is for you, too. This is not a matter of what we deserve. This is a gift, freely given for you and me. A gift from the Lord Jesus Christ. He prepares, He anoints, He fills our cup. He promises never to leave nor forsake us--never. He loves us with an everlasting love. Won’t you come to Him?
