THE GIFT OF TRUTH

In 1 John 5:20-21, we read:  “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

“Remember, Sweetie. You choose one thing. When we finish our shopping we’ll get your ‘gift of the day.'” The groundwork laid, the grandmother checked off the items on her list. Her little three-year-old granddaughter, seated in the shopping cart, watched and waited.

Items covered the bottom of the cart. In Sweetie’s hand, she held the set of gardening tools she had chosen for her gift--to work in the garden with her grandmother. All went well until they reached the check-out counter--and the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Sweetie’s favorite candy in the whole world.

Momentarily, Sweetie forgot the rules, forgot her promises, forgot everything important as she zeroed in on her idol--Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Tunnel vision. I looked at the lady behind the check-out counter. “I’m sorry, we’re going to have to leave. I have no perishables,” I added.

The lady looked at me and smiled. “I understand...and thank you. I’ll be happy to take care of this.”

On our way out, a shocked Sweetie stopped crying. “I’ll be good.”

“We’ll practice again another day,” I promised. She nodded.

Before I’m too hard on Sweetie, I confess that too many times in my life, I have suffered from tunnel vision. The Lord Jesus came and gave understanding to me of His Love and forgiveness. I know He is the One True God. I know that He loves me with an everlasting love. He has promised never to leave me nor forsake me. All of this knowledge and He has to continue to say to me: “Keep yourself from idols, child.”

“Idols?” I ask, look around me. I am at the checkout counter of the world. The things placed there are not necessarily evil or wrong but they are not right for me. So many times He must remove me from the situation.

Kingdom Thinking. Do you know that the Son of God has come and given you an understanding so that you may know Him who is true? He loves you with an everlasting love and has promised to never leave nor forsake you. Won’t you choose Him?
